[Highland Park] Warning About A Painter/Handyman
Hi everyone... Based on some references I collected on this list serve I passed along the name Garry Linzey (sp?) to a friend who needed help with a small interior/exterior paint project. Garry showed up at my friend's house in response to her call and provided a rough estimate on the back of his business card that seemed reasonable. After conversing for a while, my friend hired him with the stipulation that he come back to finalize details of the project with a fully detailed, written estimate. Within a few days of their initial meeting, he came back to her house unannounced, while she was at work, spoke to her brother and told him that he needed money up front for supplies to get the job started. My friend's brother did not know the details of his sister's agreement, but in an attempt to help the project along, obliged Mr Linzey by giving him the $150 he asked for to get things started. My friend was supposed to be providing the paint and all of the other prep supplies, so there really was no need for any money up front. In any case, after getting the $150 cash, Garry never showed up again. It's been a few weeks now and no sign of Garry. He has not returned phone calls and has not shown any signs that he is planning on returning to her home to start the project. At this point, she has moved on and only asked me to send out this message so that other people will heed this warning and not hire Garry Linzey. Garry... If you happen to see this message, I'm sure you know which customer I am referring to and I would hope that you would please return her money immediately. Thank you, Lydia
Hi all, I want to add to this warning. I, too, used Gary to do a job for me based on the rave reviews he got on this list from a couple of people. It was a terrible experience. I won't go into all of the details here, but he won't return my phone calls either. In fact, the last time I tried reaching him (at the number on his business card), I got a message that his phone wasn't taking incoming calls! Weird thing for a supposed business. Anyway, I've been meaning for the past week to write to the list about this, but didn't get to it. Thought I needed to do so now. I would NOT recommend Gary to anyone for anything. I was hesitant to comment on this, because Mr. Lantzy had great recommendations on here, but I also had a relatively unpleasant experience with him. He did come and complete all the work I had asked, and much of it was done properly, but several things weren't done well or with care. He was supposed to paint my porch and did a somewhat messy job. He also said he would fix some cracks along my stairs and whatever he used to do it dried clear and so the cracks weren't fixed at all. I had asked him to remove some nails from my wall and fix the hole and he did it really quickly and said I can touch it up with paint myself. He seemed a bit impatient towards the end to leave and I unfortunately didn't say much at the time because I didn't notice how badly some of the work had been done. Although he was very polite and nice, I really wasn't happy with the work he did. I called him a few times after that to ask him to come back and fix the stair cracks and he never answered or got back to me. Finally, I left him a message saying that I was very surprised and disappointed because I had given him a lot of money for work that was sub-par. He called me back and wasn't extremely friendly, but agreed to stop by "later that day". He never showed up or called. I remember reading really good things about him on this list-serv, which is why I called him. The last handyman I used was also disappointing and I really thought I had found someone good because he was recommended so highly. Also, being a graduate student, it is especially hard to spend so much money and then have to spend it again to get the work done again. I have also moved on, but I do caution everyone if you are using this individual that there seem to be some conflicting opinions about him. thank you, Aarthi Aarthi Padmanabhan, M.S. Shouldn’t a police report be filed on this since it seems to be fraud and theft?
