[Highland Park] Phone Scams
Actually Steve Karl is right. About 2 months ago I received a call from an Indian claiming there was something wrong with my computer and he wanted to remote in to fix it. He said he worked for MS. When I asked him where he was located he said in Washington DC. MS has only three campuses, one of which is located in DC but is almost exclusively government. Also you won’t get calls from MS. You call them; they don’t call you. Only common exception is if you have a lot of enterprise software and they are doing an audit. One trick you can use to verify if the call is from a MS employee is to ask them for the first three letters of their email address. If it starts with a V- they are probably a vendor employee most likely from India. If it starts with an A- they are most likely a contract employee located in the US. Only regular full time employees have email address that just use their names and they will almost never call you unless you have already talked to their department. When I asked him he did not want to answer and then I asked him if he was a contract, vendor or regular employee. He hung up I also got another call from an Indian that I thought was a scam so this type of operation is far more prevalent than most people think. It sure beats the many emails I used to get from disinherited Nigerian princes who wanted my help for them to obtain several million dollars. Take care, Jack PS. Since we are talking about scammers getting into your computer for personal information, the computer joke of the week. If you want to work for the NSA just send them an email. You don’t need to send them a resume. They already have all of your information on file.
