[Highland Park] Car Break-ins
so as it seems that there have been a lot of break ins recently (and i was a victim last august) i thought it might be wise to add my two cents in on this. for several years i was a parking lot attendant. i know FROM EXPERIENCE that it is NOT HARD to stick a coat hanger or some other 'slim jim' device down the window and pop a lock open. that is how my car was broken into last year right on negley ave and avondale pl, right out in the open at night. the tale tell sign of this were the streak marks on the front passenger door window, as well as the rubber gasket/trim on the window being a little bit torn on the edge. also, i am a bit obsessive about locking my car doors, so i know for a fact that they were locked. advice: 1. if you car is broken into, do NOT assume that you forgot to lock it. 2. Call the police and file a report 3. do not keep valuables in your car and if you have a radio with a detachable faceplate--detach it and take it into the house with you.. the thief will find it if you stow it in your car. 4. keep all bags out of sight (the trunk is a good place) this includes book bags with your notes for the semester and your $100 text book. the book is replaceable fairly easily... the notes will take you a long time to recoup. 5. possibly invest in a car alarm. now-a-days you can get a car alarm and remote start installed relatively inexpensively... and the remote start is great for these COLD mornings that are bound to get colder this winter. --spr
It's not just Highland Park area either... I moved to Squirrel Hill but still read this list. My car was broken into earlier this year. The thief broke a window to unlock the car and stole some quarters. (I of course filed a police report.) Now I leave my car unlocked -- since it's an 11-year-old beat-up Honda, I don't leave anything valuable in it, and if they want the quarters that bad I'd rather not have to pay to replace a broken window... :-) Since then it's been entered again at least once and stuff rummaged through, but I don't really care that much... Hi Neighbors, I live on De Victor Place in Highland Park and my car was broken into sometime between 9pm last night and 5:30 pm today. I parked and locked the car last night and as I was about to get into the car a few minutes ago, I found that the door was ajar. No doors or windows seem damaged, but the glove compartment was open- a bag of CDs and a change purse full of quarters were taken. I've just called the police and they're going to call me back so that I can file the report. All best, Ariana On Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 5:13 PM, Sean Patrick Rice < seanpatrickrice@gmail.com> wrote:
