[Highland Park] school children and motorists - safety issues
Hi neighbors – Now that school is back in session for Pittsburgh Public Schools and other schools for our neighborhood kids, I’m increasingly concerned for their safety. My first grader waits for his school bus at the corner of Jackson and Heberton streets around 8:30 in the morning, and there are four other school buses that stop there when we’re waiting. I know there are other kids who wait at this intersection earlier in the day, as well as people waiting for two different Port Authority bus routes. This intersection is also a block away from Dilworth school, and we’ve seen Dilworth kids travel through this intersection on their way to school. This intersection is a four way stop. As many of you familiar with the intersection may know, many motorists on Heberton Street (both up and down the hill) seem to think that the stop signs are optional. While waiting for the bus this morning, my son and his dad saw at least five cars blow through the intersection. My partner got fed up with this reckless and unsafe behavior and stopped a couple of motorists to remind them that this intersection sees a lot of pedestrians, especially kids. We've been advised by Patrick Dowd to call 911 when this occurs, and he also recommended either photographing or videotaping the intersection to identify the cars, and actually posting the video on YouTube. We intend to do all of these things so please make sure you're following the rules of the road when you travel our neighborhood's (and all) streets. Our children deserve to be safe while going to and from school. Becky Jackson Street
Our neighbors found a small white puppy this (Saturday) morning wandering the 6100 block of Jackson Street. It has no tags- If it is your puppy, or you know to whom in belongs, call Roger 412-600-9796. Liz Buchanan
