[Highland Park] Evensong at St. Andrew's
Evensong at St. Andrew's Thursday February 4, 8 p.m. Long-time Highland Park resident and HPCC Member Betty Jo Rieley will play works by Frederic Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn in the recital following Choral Evensong this month at St. Andrew's. The service, beginning at 8 p.m., observes Candlemas (The Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple: the Purification of St. Mary the Virgin), which traditionally falls on the 40th Day of Christmas, February 2. (Here in Pennsylvania, of course, there is an additional name for this midwinter holiday . . . . Or at least that is the case up in Punxatawney!) Sung by St. Andrew's Choir will be service music by William Smith of Durham (Sentences) and C.V. Stanford (Service in A Major), with introit by Johannes Eccard and anthem by Orlando Gibbons. Guest Preacher will be the Rt. Rev. Kenneth L. Price, Jr., our new Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh. And a festive Candlemas Dessert Reception will follow the recital, in the Parish Hall. St. Andrew's is located at 5801 Hampton Street, in Highland Park. Everyone is welcome.
