Glassman Announced as President & CEO of Community Design Center of Pittsburgh Award-Winning Architect and PA Human Relations Commission Chair to Bring Creative Leadership, Political Experience, and Advocacy Know-How to the CDCP (PITTSBURGH, PA) May 24, 2011-The Community Design Center of Pittsburgh (CDCP) board of directors today announced the appointment of Stephen A. (Steve) Glassman as its president & ceo, effective June 13, 2011. Mr. Glassman succeeds Anne-Marie Lubenau, AIA, who is starting a Loeb Fellowship at Harvard University later this summer. "We conducted a national search to find a visionary leader with a blend of passion, creativity, and commitment to collaboration. Steve exceeds our expectations," said CDCP board member and Transition Committee chair Ken Doyno, AIA. "The breadth of Steve's experience and enthusiasm is significant, and we look forward to working with him to increase the CDCP's visibility and impact." Mr. Glassman practiced architecture as the principal of his own Maryland and Pennsylvania-based architectural firm-Art and Architectural Design-for 25 years. His residential and commercial work appeared more than 100 times in national publications and won numerous awards and citations, including Metropolitan Home magazine's award for Outstanding Renovation of the Year. Mr. Glassman has advanced degrees in architecture and art history from Brown and Yale Universities, and has taught at the college and graduate school levels. In addition to his architectural practice, Mr. Glassman served a five-year term as Baltimore City's Civic Design Commissioner, responsible for the administration of its "1% for Art" program and the identification and placement of public artwork throughout Baltimore City under Mayor Kurt Schmoke. Mr. Glassman co-chaired the first national conference on "Diversity in the Design Professions," sponsored by the American Institute of Architects. His curatorial experience includes design of the "Richard Brown Baker" exhibition at Yale University Art Gallery Museum, and assistant curator of prints and drawings for the Fountainebleau exhibition at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. For the past eight years, Mr. Glassman has served as the chair of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, which is an appointment made by the governor and confirmed by the State Senate. During that time he managed one of the nation's oldest and largest human relations agencies with staff in four major offices across the Commonwealth (including the City of Pittsburgh), while directing more than 15 major initiatives annually. During his tenure, Mr. Glassman developed successful working teams that significantly enhanced the reputation and visibility of the agency while professionalizing its business practices and increasing its performance standards. Mr. Glassman is an experienced and effective advocate at the federal, state, and local levels representing interests of Pennsylvania residents with the U.S. Congressional delegation, HUD and EEOC, the Department of Education, Pennsylvania State Senators and Representatives, university presidents, school superintendents, police chiefs, and mayors and county commissioners throughout the commonwealth. He is a graduate of Harvard University's JFK School of Government program for senior executives in state and local government. Over the course of his career, Mr. Glassman has raised millions of dollars for charitable and political causes. His many awards and recognitions include a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Statewide Pennsylvania Rights Coalition; the Philadelphia Bar Association Cheryl Ingram Award for Community Service; Human Rights Campaign Outstanding Person of the Year Award; Philadelphia Pride Festival Gilbert Baker Award; Governor's Award for Outstanding Contribution to Architecture; and the Governor's Award for Outstanding Public Service in fighting AIDS/HIV. Mr. Glassman has spoken around the country-including the Andy Warhol Museum and WQED MultiMedia-and at the House of Lords in London, England. He has been featured in major media publications ranging from The New York Times and Washington Post to NPR's Morning Edition and All Things Considered. He also appeared on the Martha Stewart Show on NBC and on an episode of Frasier, entitled "The Doctor is Out."
