[Highland Park] Re: armed robbery - taking action
How do you start a block watch? How do you make sure law enforcement knows about suspicious activity in your neighborhood before it becomes more serious? How do you make sure the Zone 5 Police Commander as well as the Mayor, the Chief of Police, and the Director of Public Safety know what you think? Come to the *Zone 5 Citizen’s Public Safety Council meeting at the Union Project on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 7:00 pm. Commander Larry Ross is slated to attend along with Mayor Ravenstahl, Chief Harper, and Director Huss. Other local officials usually attend as well –like reps from Councilman Dowd’s office, Senator Ferlo's office and the Bureau of Building Inspection (BBI). *Speak up and make sure they know your concerns and questions. Put the meeting on your calendar now and make every effort to attend. Thank you, Heather for suggesting a block watch. Cameras may make us feel good, but as the folks of the Morningside Area Community Council learned when cameras were placed at Heths Field, they may only serve to antagonize those up to no good. One shot at the camera lens with a well-aimed rock, bb-gun (or worse), does the camera in. If you are interested in starting or joining a block watch, or in just learning the most effective ways to prevent and report crime to the police so they can adequately plan patrols, attend the April 14 meeting at the Union Project at 7:00 pm. There might not be someone there who can solve your problems for you, but someone may be able to suggest effective ways to work with your neighbors and public services to solve problems together. The Mayor is up for re-election this year. This meeting is also a good opportunity to hear things from him that may inform your vote in May's primary. If you're new to the area...the November election for Mayor of Pittsburgh is usually won by the Democratic nominee. I hope to see many unfamiliar faces at the meeting. Be safe, everyone. -Bridget Jakub, South Morningside ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <neighborhood-request@highlandparkpa.com> Date: Thu, Apr 2, 2009 at 10:17 AM Subject: Neighborhood Digest, Vol 66, Issue 5 To: neighborhood@highlandparkpa.com Send Neighborhood mailing list submissions to neighborhood@highlandparkpa.com To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://lists.highlandparkpa.com/mailman/listinfo/neighborhood or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to neighborhood-request@highlandparkpa.com You can reach the person managing the list at neighborhood-owner@highlandparkpa.com When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of Neighborhood digest..." That's just creepy. Certainly there are other ways of addressing safety in our neighborhoods. How about block watches or small groups of volunteers who are willing to walk or bike the neighborhood streets on a regular basis or something? I wanted to make you aware of some of the resources in the Mayor’s Office to help combat the recent wave of vandalism and violence in the Highland Park neighborhood. As mentioned by some of those on this listserve, we have begun implementing our city-wide camera surveillance system. Police will be placing cameras in high-crime areas, based on crime data. This is indicated in the privacy policy adopted by City Council and available online. The Police will have the authority to move the cameras as crime flare-ups may occur. The cameras will be placed where the crime is most prominent. As the Mayor’s camera program continues, he will be working to retrieve more funding in order to expand the program to more neighborhoods. We also have funding available to increase lighting in the neighborhood. As part of the Taking Care of Business Districts Program, we have funding available for lighting and increased wattage in existing light fixtures, among other items. We are tailoring the program to fit each individual neighborhood, and if this is something that the Highland Park Community would like to see implemented in the neighborhood, we encourage you to contact our Office or your local community group with a list of proposed locations. Finally – as I am sure many of you are aware – the Juvenile Curfew Center will be up and running this summer. Three Rivers Youth - will soon be operating the new City Curfew Center at their Oakland site located at 200 North Dithridge Street. The nonprofit organization ran the City's former curfew and truancy center Downtown and has been tasked with creating a more welcoming environment for youths so that they will be more apt to seek available help and support. The Mayor’s goal here is to positively affect young people who are at risk of falling into the trap of gangs, drugs, and violence. Youths found to be in violation of the City's curfew will be brought to the center and immediately assessed by intake counselors. The Center is set to open May 1, 2009. Ten staff members, made up of a supervisor and outreach counselors will be identifying which services youths need. Such services may include family-based support and counselors will ultimately coordinate an action plan for connecting youths with appropriate community-based services. With the summer months approaching, this should prevent some of the nuisance behavior that the Highland Park community has experienced in the past. Thank you and please do not hesitate to call our Office with any questions or concerns! Three young African American men (aged 18-23, roughly), riding bicycles and wearing dark clothing, approached him and asked if he wanted to buy drugs. Hello- I appreciate the community's responses. Please know that we do review the emails that come across the listserv and respond to appropriate resident issues. Starting a block watch is a great idea! In some ways this listserv works as a type of block watch with residents warning others in the community of crimes. Last fall, Michael Nadler (President of HPCC), Officer Gay (Zone 5 Community Policing Officer) and I came to the Highland Park Community Council meeting. We provided crime maps of the neighborhood, information on how to start a successful block watch and some public safety tips for residents. Having a block watch can help significantly reduce crime in your area. If you would like for us to make some of these materials available at the Zone 5 Public Safety meeting, we are happy to do so. We look forward to seeing you at the Public Safety Council meeting! Just to keep you all informed and on the lookout: Last night we noticed a small red car parked in front of our house on Jackson near Heberton with 4 young people inside who looked to be about high school or college age. Definitely 2 boys with possibly one or two girls in the back seat. They turned on the dome light for a couple minutes and we saw they were using IV drugs so we called 911. Unfortunately, the car left the scene before police arrived about 5 minutes later. They were white and looked like typical college students, with the drug user wearing a white ball cap. Can't think of any reason they'd be on Jackson unless they live in the neighborhood or purchased the drugs here. Both pretty glum things to contemplate. Please come to the safety meeting at the Union project Tuesday night to talk about how we can stop this crime in our neighborhood. Cheryl Jackson St.
