[Highland Park] Moderation of the Highland Park Neighborhood list
The Highland Park Neighborhood list is "moderated" (meaning that a human has to approve or deny each message). It has always been that way--messages submitted to the list will not always make it to the subscribers. You may ask: "Why is the list moderated? And who are the moderators?" Those are very good questions... The list is moderated to keep messages on topic and to limit list traffic to a reasonable amount. Messages must be about Highland Park, including its residents, organizations, businesses, and the park; or of specific interest to its residents, including issues relating to surrounding/connected communities such as the redevelopment in East Liberty. The general rule is that messages that are not related to Highland Park or that continue a long sequence of replies may be rejected by the moderators. Harsh, offensive, or ill-formed messages may be rejected too, but with a request to resend the messages with suggested changes. (The list server software automatically discards messages that look like spam and removes HTML and attachments, by the way.) The moderators are volunteers who live right here in Highland Park. There are just two of us: Bob Staresinic and me. We donate our time and resources to maintain the list as a high-quality resource for the neighborhood. We are also members of the HPCC and HPCDC but we do not represent those organizations when we make moderation decisions. We gladly accept questions and comments about the way we run the list, but please be nice to us because we are *volunteers* and we use our judgment according to what we think are the best interests of the neighborhood--especially our subscribers. (Currently there are 524 of you!) Also we make mistakes because we obviously aren't perfect--please don't take it personally! I hope this clears up some of the confusion that has become apparent over the past couple of days... I would appreciate it if anyone who has comments, questions, suggestions, etc., would please send them to me (not to the list, please). (I apologize in advance if I am slow to respond.) If we end up with a workable proposal to change the list policies, we will solicit your input and achieve a consensus before making any changes. Rudy
