Hello Neighbors: School starts this Wednesday and Thursday for students at the Barack Obama Academy of International Studies 6-12 which is now located at Peabody High School. Student enrollment is projected to reach 1,000 students, and 120 staff will be working in the school. There is also a pre-K program at the facility which is not associated with the Obama Academy. Please be aware of pedestrians and cyclists on North Highland Ave and throughout East Liberty. Students come from throughout the School District to attend this school, and many students are expected to utilize the East Busway and walk on foot through East Liberty to and from the school. Residents can expect increased vehicular traffic and school bus traffic early in the morning and in the mid-afternoon. Some parking restrictions have been changed around the school as well. The school is a closed campus during the day, but students participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities in the evenings. The intersection at North Highland Ave and East Liberty Boulevard is not pedestrian friendly, and hopefully upgrades to the intersection will improve pedestrian access and safety at some point in the future.
