RUSHYAN AGAIN Paths of molten wax: Batik textiles by Rushyan Yen. Batik and tea. The transformation of a blank piece of fabric into a work of art using wax and dye is the definition of batik. For 14 months, Rushyan traveled to study the different techniques of this art form and in each of 12 countries, paint her own designs on cloth. The variety of patterns and designs that emerged are a reflection of the cultures and societies in which they were made. After a near three year hiatus, Union Project’s stained glass restoration classes and workshops are back in partnership with Prism Stained Glass and the Pittsburgh Glass Center. From an unheated, partially roofless atrium seven years ago, to a warm and friendly downstairs studio, Union Project’s Glass Action Program has taught over 200 members of the local community the art of stained glass restoration.
