I’ve received a lot of replies from people similarly shocked and sad about the trees. A couple people asked me who to write to at PWSA about the issue. I’m not sure this is the correct way but I sent a non emergency note here - and I specifically asked for a reply:

I encourage others to write to them too. If they hear from more of us, maybe they’ll plant more trees - and think twice about whether removing such beauties is really  necessary in the future.

I am so disappointed that PWSA removed at least five enormous trees in the park, along Bunkerhill. When a guy from PWSA was presenting information about this work at an HPCC meeting a while back, I specifically asked about the impact to trees and he led us to believe that it was possible none would have to be removed.

I guess this is just a general gripe. I plan to drop a note to PWSA and urge them to do more than a one to one replacement. Some of those trees had to have been at least 100 years old and you can't replace one of those with a tiny sapling.
