I switched to FIOS several months ago and am totally underwhelmed.  It took some time to get the internet access portion straightened out; numerous calls to the tech department later, I finally figured out the problem myself and it’s been OK every since.  I don’t find it any quicker than DSL, and sometimes, slower.  Because of the battery backup unit and router, you really need a dedicated electrical outlet; they installed this stuff in my basement where the outlets are wired with the overhead lighting, so I have to keep some of the lights on all of time for the router to operate.  The telephone portion periodically has so much noise in the background that I call people from my cell phone.  It’s unacceptable but I haven’t been able to get anyone out to fix it.

Bottom line – if you’re happy with DSL, stick with it until they get the bugs worked out of FIOS.

Subject: [Highland Park] Problems with Internet Verizon Service

Is it only my impression or the Verizon Service (I have DSL) has been quite erratic lately? In the afternoon/evening the signal is there, but quite weak, slow and, sometimes, disappearing completely. That makes connections to internet quite frustrating...

Any input from FIOS subscribers if the system is really worth to have internet access?

Thanks!

Here’s the promised update to the Verizon Outage post last week.

The Verizon outage covered at least a dozen houses on Cordova, King, Bryant and Negley (no FIOS subscribers and only some of the Plain-Old-Telephone-Service and DSL users were affected). The outage lasted a week, from 2:00PM Tuesday, December 30 to 1:00AM Wednesday, January 7. Some folks were credited a full month of phone and DSL, others were credited $25. Bob at Channel 4’s “Call for Action” was a big help, too.

Thanks.
