Wow. A number of responses to my post (see below) came in within hours, along with requests that I share the results. Meantime, I did a little research myself. From Fortune.com: (emphasis theirs) Two years ago, neighborhood social network Nextdoor made waves in the tech world by becoming one of the few technology companies to reach a $1 billion valuation without earning a dime of revenue. ... The main way Nextdoor makes money is through ads within the feed of comments and questions by its users. Another item mentioned controversy over racial profiling. Nextdoor is a privately-held company based in San Francisco and operating in eight countries besides the US. HPers offered their own experiences and thoughts. A summary: Three agreed about the possibility of fracturing communication if we have to use two neighborhood networks. Other comments, condensed, are as follows: --"a cumbersome Facebook type thing" --New HP resident used it in previous neighborhood and finds it better because the app lets you search and you don't get an email for every post --"You can post from information from nearby neighborhoods." --dislikes it, says it was "pretty horribly negative most of the time" when used at a previous residence --"No need to replace our wonderful list serve." --"It's way too busy...you have to search through everything..." Does anyone know why there are people promoting an online network called Nextdoor? We just received a mailer from someone on Collins urging us to join in order to share "service provider recommendations, items for sale/free...etc," the same purposes for which we have the list serve. It seems to me that this undercuts the established list serve and thereby fragments communications in the neighborhood, not to mention complicating the efforts of folks trying to locate lost pets or possessions.
