Hi Neighbors,
There will be a kid-friendly black lives matter march in HP on Saturday, June 20th. Please see below for details.
What: Kid-friendly Black Lives Matter March
When: Saturday, June 20 - 10:00AM
Where: Corner of Bryant St. and Highland Ave. (see route details below)
Kids Supporting Black Lives Matter is hosting a third family-friendly march, this time in Highland Park. This march is a safe, family-friendly way for our kids to learn about and participate in activism for the Black Lives Matter movement. This is meant to be a safe place where kids can voice their thoughts/feelings about what is happening in our country today. The plan is to continue these marches for as long as we are able to. The location may change so stay tuned.
This march also comes on the heels of the Juneteenth anniversary, a day that recognizes and celebrates the end of slavery in the USA. If you are unable to make some of the other protests due to childcare, this might be a good option to participate. Because this weekend's march is a day/week/month to celebrate - consider bringing bubbles and balloons to keep the littlest ones entertained, and to put a positive spin on the activism.
• Marching starts at 10:00am.
• The front of the march will begin at the corner of Highland Ave / Bryant St. You can use Taza D'Oro (unaffiliated) as a reference point. See notes below about lining up safely.
• We will head down Highland Ave to Highland / Stanton, Stanton / Negley, Negley / Bryant, and back to Bryant / Highland Ave.
• Please abide by all traffic rules and do not block traffic (we do not have a permit).
• We will do one round around the mile-and-a-half radius and then disperse.
• Make signs with your kids! Teach them why we are marching. Wearing signs or adhering them to a stroller can be very useful with little ones.
• Bring chalk and noise makers.
Please take the necessary Covid-19 precautions:
• Start at Highland / Bryant, lining up down Highland Ave (north of Bryant) so no one walks through each other. Try not to walk next to those already lined up. Please walk on the other side of the street to get to the end of the line or join from Elgin St.
• While you wait for the march to start please claim 2-3 sidewalk squares with chalked Black Lives Matter supportive messages to maintain 6 ft. distance between family groups.
• Please bring noise makers (we want to minimize viral spread AND it can also be hard to chant with little ones, strollers, etc., but we don't want to be silent) Think percussion, drums, pots & pans, bells, tambourines etc. Wind instruments/noise makers not recommended.
• Wear masks at all times (reasonable exceptions as necessary).
• Once the march is done, please head back to your cars/homes in order to avoid congregating in large groups.
