hi neighbors! in case you haven't seen, the petition to close the open air police firing range--
one of only two open air police firing ranges in a residential neighborhood in the country!-- is
here.
thanks for your support and signatures! the range is on mayor gainey's priority list for his first term, and he has noticed our petition. city council is talking about it. public safety is talking about it. a story about the firing range is coming out this week in city paper.
FAQs
where do other American cities have their police ranges?
in industrial neighborhoods and by airports, or, in the case of cities such as las vegas, in mountain foothills.
don't the police have to train somewhere?
absolutely. training very important. there are two existing ranges our force can use: in Alison Park, and McCandless.
are the waste products from 40 years of gunfire a health concern?
absolutely. firing range waste (casings, bullets) contains a lot of lead. we don't know if the waste on the hill is disposed of propoerly or that cleanup is supervised. that's a lot of lead potentially seeping into our water. honolulu's police firing range closed recently because officers had
elevated lead levels.
again thanks for signing, please share widely!
