In this workshop, you will learn how to make a sculptural ceramic plate of food with guest artist Nikki Lau. You’ll learn how to make a plate or platter with the option to include a hanging system to make wall art. You’ll learn to form different types of food like meats, dairy, vegetables, fruits, carbohydrates, and more, adding texture and glazes to create depth and color for your food items. Handbuilding techniques covered will include coil, pinch, kurinuki, and texture imprinting. Additionally, you’ll learn about layering and fusing glazes.

Workshop Schedule:
1 – 4pm each day – Studio learning and work time with instructor, guest artist Nikki Lau
4 – 5pm each day – Optional independent work time

This workshop is appropriate for students of all levels, including beginners, but some previous clay experience is encouraged.

Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Each registration includes clay, tools, glaze, and firing costs for one participant. No outside clay or glazes permitted.
 
About Nikki Lau
Nikki Lau was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. She received her MFA in ceramics at Pennsylvania State University in 2016. She received her BA in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts at the University of Washington in 2008. She was the artist resident at The Clay Art Center in New York from 2018 – 2019 and the 2019 – 2020 resident at Armory Art Center in Florida. Her work is a mixture of sculpture and pottery. In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Nikki found her way back to San Francisco. She started making and selling pottery full-time. She currently splits her time between California and Pennsylvania, living her snowbird life as she works on her pottery and home décor business, Little Lau Shop.
