Subject: Christmas Tree Recycling Saturday, 1/9 - Girl Scout Fundraiser
To: neighborhood@highlandparkpa.comNeighbors,Thank you to everyone who responded to our survey last month about interest in a possible Christmas tree recycling fundraiser! We got a really robust response! If you are not aware, the city of Pittsburgh does NOT compost Christmas trees that are picked up curb side. You CAN, however, drop off your tree at the yard waste disposal centers located around the city. (http://apps.pittsburghpa.gov/dpw/2015-12-23ChristmasTreeCollection.pdf)Our troop of Brownies is offering to pick up your tree and bring it to the recycling center this Saturday to save you the trouble! We are doing this as a fundraiser, and to keep this service available to as many folks as possible, we are only asking for a $5 minimum donation for picking up your tree.Because this is a trial year, we are limiting ourselves to 50 trees and to the Highland Park neighborhood or closely adjoining streets this year. We hope this works really well, and runs smoothly, and look forward to expanding the program next year. Please respond to this email with your address and the nearest cross streets. We will cluster pick ups into areas and schedule a pick up timeframe for Saturday.Where does that donation go? Every year we identify one local charity to which to donate a percentage of our fundraising. Last year, we donated over 200 books to Jeremiah's Place, an emergency shelter in Homewood, to help with their efforts to send home a book with every child who uses their services. We have not identified this year's charity, but will let the neighborhood know what we do accomplish with the funds. We also will use funds to offset the costs of camp for our girls and to help with the purchase of camping supplies for the troop to use in the years going forward. Also, Girl Scout Cookie time starts this Friday! Girls will be out in the cold offering you the chance to support Scouting. Please look to support your neighborhood scout - there are many in Highland Park! However, if you don't have a regular supplier, we will have an order form with us, so you can place an order when we get your tree, if you are so inclined! :-)Wishing you all a Happy New Year!
