Hey Highland Parkers,
Thank you so much for the great responses – now I have a lot of places to donate and feel like the books are really going to the right places! There were a lot of requests to share the information. Here are the responses, copied and pasted…
Carnegie libraries
-takes books, CDs & DVDs if in
good condition and will provide a receipt for tax purposes. Obviously the
East Liberty location is closed for remodeling
-we have taken books to the carnegie library branch (east liberty not currently open). closest branch is lawrenceville i think. they sell them to raise funds
Book ‘Em
- would LOVE
to have those books in particular and all others; our books-to-prisoners
program needs job-hunting books and prisoners request all sorts of books, so
feel bring to bring as many as you can regardless of covers or condition.
Especially welcome are dictionaries, thesauruses, and almanacs or books of
facts such as encyclopedias. The prisoners are so polite and so very grateful
for books to help them keep their sanity in a negative environment, and to
study for jobs or careers for when they get out (if they ever do). And I
especially like to send books and calendars with beautiful color and pictures
of nature.
We are totally
OUT of money for postage to mail books with no prospects in sight, so financial
donations are also welcome as are stamps of any kind. I wonder if there are any
churches or community groups who would do a dictionary drive for us or donate
money? We are a project of Thomas Merton Center which is a 501c3 nonprofit and
therefore tax-deductible.
-You can drop
them off at the Thomas Merton Center weekdays 9-5
http://www.thomasmertoncenter.org/bookem/index.html
on Penn Ave near People’s
Indian.

Half Price Books on McKnight road
-they pay you money for
them and then you can donate the money to the charity of your
choice. They know more than most charities about the best way to
reuse used books. You won't get much, but I feel it is better than
donating them to Goodwill.
Good Will
-accepts books & mags
to sell
-also a person wrote “Goodwill only takes novels”
How about Pittsburgh literacy council.
-
There is a place across the side street from CVS in East Liberty (Literacy Council) that may want them or
know where to send them. Don't forget, there is our community garage sale
in June
Also the Vassaar Bryn Mawr book store in Oakland will take books. You could call and check with them to see if your topics are ones they will accept.
Try the women's correctional facility in Oakland.
I gave them tons
of stuff at one time.
Brother's Brother
Foundation in the North Side. They donate
them to libraries in Africa.
I think St
Andrew’s church on Hampton takes book donations.
I know Edgewood library (CC
Mellor) takes donations (closer than North Hills.)
I believe that Metro Family
Practice, a not-for-profit primary care group just off Penn Ave. in Point
Breeze will take children's books. Their web site is at http://www.metrofamilypractice.org/.
The east end thrift shop takes
books and just about everything else. they resell at very low prices serving
low income folks in garfield etc. they're at 5123 penn ave but have limited
hours as they are staffed by volunteers. call ahead at 412 361 6010.
