Using the gene-editing tool CRISPR, the five pigs were rendered “surrogate sires,” sterile themselves but capable of being implanted with another male pig’s stem cells. That process creates sperm with the implanting male’s desired traits, which are successfully passed on to offspring. The objective is to quickly produce desirable traits for improved food production. Such offspring have not yet been reviewed by FDA for potential human consumption.
