I may be the lucky one. Since I am new to the neighborhood your birds have been kind enough to welcome me.

There are 4 cardinal pairs, at least 10-15 finches and only one blue jay - I keep looking for his mate, but still haven't spotted her.

Anyway, I first starting feeding them occasionally, but found they sat in my bushes behind my house waiting for my attention. I put out warm dishes of water and now feed them every day. They have become so accustom to me opening the back door, you can hear them getting exciting in anticipation of a treat. My cat sits on the back porch to watch them feed and they don't seem to be bothered by her or my dog.

It is truly amazing and I am so touched. I look forward to going into my kitchen just to see if they are out in the back yard.

Living on Jackson Street at N. Sheridan Street and loving it.

Subject: [Highland Park] No birds to watch

Any ornithologists out there? Or a plain old bird-watcher will do. This is the first winter NO birds are coming to my bird feeder. I've checked the feeder and it seems OK. But after a few weeks of no feather friends, I'm wondering if there's something I could do to encourage them back. Any ideas? And is anyone else noticing the same thing? --Puzzled
