Since so many of you expressed an interest in the responses I got, here's the list (in order of frequency of references) that I have compiled. (In case it matters, though, only the first three on the list got more than one reference.) My original message is below too. A few of them were outside the Highland Park area, so I've put those on a second list:

Union Project (corner of Stanton and Negley)
Has kitchen
www.unionproject.org

Nuin Center (Bryant and Mellon)
Has kitchen
412-661-6108

St. Andrew's Church on Hampton (has kitchen space, reasonable rates)

Abyssinna Art Gallery on Penn Ave. near Babyland (has kitchen, large space, 2 baths, loft)

Reynold's on Bryant Restaurant (private room for 25-30 people, optional food)

The Zoo
No kitchen
412-365-2536

Outside the Highland Park area:

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral (Dithridge St. in Oakland)
Has a large hall and a smaller hall (probably kitchen space as well)
412-682-3866 (ask for Janine)

Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church on the northside
412-322-4261

St. Raphael School (not sure of its location)
Has kitchen and off-street parking
412-661-3100

Once again, thank you all for responding.

Does anyone on this list know of an affordable (for individuals) community hall or space or apartment that one can rent for a few hours for a birthday party or similar social event?

Thanks,
