The strangest thing happened Friday in the park,
and I feel like I should advise the community...As I was running in the park
along Lake Drive, just coming down around the corner by the employee's entrance
to the zoo, I spotted a tiny baby turkey running not two feet in front on
me. And just as my instincts told me to get away from it because it's
mother was certain to be around, a giant turkey attacked me. It came out
of the woods on the embankment - which put it at head level with me. It
flew right into my head, dug it's claws into my hat (thank goodness I had it
on), and ripped the hat right off my head. As the hat was falling, I
managed to grab it and swat at the turkey as it continued to attack me. I
took off running as fast as I could and that thing was actually running after me
- and keeping up. It chased me for a good 50 feet before it stopped and
walked away. So, first of all PLEASE be careful if you're up in that
area. It happened so fast that there was absolutely NO way I could have
avoided it. There was no one around, and despite me screaming
twice, there was no one to hear who could have helped had that thing
actually hurt me. Secondly, who do I call to report this to?
I'm sure someone who is responsible for the park should be informed of it, but I
can't find a phone number on the website.
Thanks,
Rachel
