I am so grateful for the outpouring of responses to this post!  We found a good pair of crutches right away.  

However, I was so moved by how many people who are willing to share that I want to help others in need.  I reached out to the BrothersBrother Foundation here in Pittsburgh to confirm that they accept donations of medical equipment among other things.  If you have crutches, canes or walkers you would like to donate,  I will be happy to collect them on my porch this weekend and bring a carload to the North Side.
