This discussion will focus on the different aspects of human trafficking, including modern day slavery, law enforcement and non-profit groups working to combat this activity, and the exploitation of victims.
Description: The UN defines human trafficking as "all acts related to the recruitment, transport, sale or purchase of
individuals through force, fraud or other coercive means for the purpose of economic exploitation."
This activity is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights, not to mention the 3rd largest and fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world. Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims. Traffickers target undocumented migrants, oppressed groups, runaways and at-risk youth, and the poor most frequently. A little known fact is that currently there are more slaves today than during the height of the Transatlantic slave-trade.
