Another way is through Pittsburgh Freecycle. It's a Yahoo group where you offer items for free or ask for items for free. The premise of the group is to keep items out of landfills. It's easy to join by asking for Pittsburgh Freecycle on a search engine.

I've offered things and obtained items I needed for years through freecycle.
