Follow up! I’ve already had a few responses, but it was recommended to me to maybe give a little more information:
MyPlace is program under ACTION Housing, a nonprofit agency that has many different types of housing program from mortgage help, savings account programs, housing for seniors and persons with disabilities, and much much more. MyPlace is a relatively new program that is growing! We currently have 18 youth in our program and will be getting six more by the end of this year….with a potential for even more youth to be off the streets and safely housed.
All donations will receive a receipt with an estimate of the amount donated that can be used for tax deductible purposes. Again, I will be happy to pick up your donated items whenever is convenient for you. Let me know if you have any questions about our program or how you can help!
Please see below! Thanks again Neighbors!
Greetings Neighbors!
You all were so amazing regarding the donated bicycle for my youth, I thought I’d try to reach out to you again for some other needed items.
I am a case manager for a transitional housing program called MyPlace. This program helps homeless former foster care youth ages 18-24 and sets them up in an apartment on their own for two years. We work on employment, education, life skills, etc. Our program provides them with the big stuff, couches, beds, dressers, etc. but we don’t help out with the small items.
These kids are starting out on their own for the first time with little previous direction. While meeting with one of my clients, he began opening a can of mandarin oranges with a steak knife. These youth are working, but sometimes only part time and at low
wages. This youth in particular is waiting for his food stamps to kick in so any money he earns is going directly to food and transportation needs. Most of my clients live in the East Liberty/Highland Park area and I have five young ladies moving in within
the next couple months.
So, what I’m seeking are donated household items, that are either new or gently used that our program can’t cover, things like:
-can openers, brooms, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, giant eagle gift cards, utensils, etc.
Items we cannot accept are “soft items” like bedding, pillows, carpets, etc.
I will be able to pick up these items when it is convenient for you. Thank you neighbors!
