Homes similar to this one on Fairmount Street will be rehabilitated and sold to qualified low-income buyers with assistance from the PHFA.

ELDI awarded state grant to expand affordable homeownership opportunities in Garfield

The Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) recently awarded a $200,000 grant to ELDI through their Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE) Fund. The funds for this grant come from the Commonwealth’s portion of the realty transfer tax paid when buying or selling real estate. The grant will assist in the rehabilitation of seven vacant or abandoned homes in Garfield. It is also helping leverage additional grants and loans for these projects.

"PHFA is pleased to provide some PHARE funding to ELDI,” said PHFA Executive Director and CEO Brian Hudson, Sr. “They are doing important work to expand homeownership opportunities for low-income families in neighborhoods like Garfield.”

These seven homes—which range in size from three to five bedrooms—will be available for sale to qualified buyers between 50 and 80 percent of area median income and their location in a neighborhood on the rise will help these buyers secure not just a safe, comfortable home but an asset likely to grow in value. ELDI is working with Circles Greater Pittsburgh and Open Hand Ministries to help potential buyers prepare to become homeowners.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a homeowner in Garfield, East Liberty, or Larimer please contact Mary Hester at ELDI: 412-361-8061 or mary.hester@eastliberty.org.

Check out the proposals for the South Beatty & Mignonette Streets redevelopment

On September 26th, the URA held a community meeting to present plans for the redevelopment of publicly owned sites on South Beatty and Mignonette Streets. In case you missed the meeting, you can view the presentations made by the developers here.

About the project:

The URA recently requested proposals from developers and/or development teams for multiple publicly owned sites in East Liberty. The goal of the RFP is to select a respondent who can complete a high-quality mixed-use, mixed-income development, including a parking structure, on South Beatty and Mignonette Streets.

At the meeting, presentations from shortlisted redevelopers were presented to the community for feedback.
