Dear neighbors,
I have been asked by a friend of mine to see if we could help these Afghan families who were airlifted last August from Kabul airport, the saddest scenes we all watched on TV of families fleeing the Taliban for their life. A few families have arrived in Pittsburgh and they have next to nothing.
I am personally helping a young man whom I met Saturday. He was wearing a thin jacket and flip flops in the freezing weather! He told me of his journey: from Kabul he was sent to Quatar, then on to Germany, then to an air force base in Wisconsin and finally to Pittsburgh where he arrived a month ago. He has a job in a commercial laundry downtown and it takes him 2 hours each day to go to his job from McKeesrock where he lives currently. From what I understand all the refugies are given 6 months of help after which they are basically on their own.

Sayed's dream is to find a job as an automobile mechanic in Pittsburgh and to find a better and safer place to live. He can afford 650 dollars a month for rent. He studied and has a completion diploma from an automotive vocational school. He then went into the Afghan Army and was attached as an assistant to one of the members of their parlement thus putting his life in grave danger by the Taliban. He still has family in Kabul. I would appreciate so much if anyone has an idea how to help Sayed get into an automotive school (if that exists) or find a job as a mechanic.

I am forwarding the list that my amazing friend Fahima Gaheez aka "mother of all Afghan refugies" as Sayed called her (https://www.afghanwomensfund.org/about-our-director) has given me. I thought maybe our wonderful community might help. Each of these families need essential items as you can see from the list. I will divulge the names or addresses to respect the families privacy to those who would like to help. May be an organization or group of friends might sponsor a family. You can drop any separate donations to me at 5900 Hampton Street and I will make certain that it all goes to those in need. Walmart cards, old telephone, old laptops are in great demand.
As you can see the items are no luxuries but things to become self sufficient.
I hope that we as a community we will rally around these families and welcome them whole heartedly.
Thank you.
