Hello Neighbors,
A group of neighbors from Highland Park and some surrounding neighborhoods is working with the Pittsburgh Police Department to negotiate hours of use at the shooting range. Thank you volunteers! The email below from Zone 5's Commander Vinansky outlines the schedule agreed to through Sept 1.
Greetings Everyone,
The schedule for officers having firearms training on the shooting range is as follows:
July 27 through Sept 1
Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 4:00 PM.
Fridays will be 10:00 AM only.
Each shooting session should be approximately two hours long.
We do have an engineer looking at the shooting range to make some upgrades, and also examining how to reduce noise levels, I will provide more information at a later time.
I thank all of you for your patience as we look to address the issues of the firearms training range.
Commander Fisher is included in this email, and will be helping me to provide updated information.
Respectfully,
Commander Stephen Vinansky

Hi Everyone,
Here are the responses I received regarding places to view Comet NEOWISE, in case anyone else wants to try to see it. Thanks to everyone who responded to my inquiry.
·
There
is a celestial observatory area over by Deer Lakes Park. Maybe that would be a
good spot? https://3ap.org/
·
Easily
seen from "Mount Bigelow" in Highland Park, well above the trees.
The walk in and out is easy pleasant from Highland. Prodigious Pgh light
pollution is relatively dim to the NW (still very urban). Nice binocular view,
but dark sky? Not so much. Only major constellations naked eye.
Have fun.
·
Hartwood Acres
area. We saw it at the Hampton Community Park in the orchard.
·
Wagman observatory near Deer Lakes. Parking is
a little tricky (on road/not much shoulder) but many other cars were there. The
view was great, not much ambient light, & and people kept good distance
from each other. I went Saturday night, around 9:15 & saw the comet,
Jupiter, Saturn, & the ISS.
Best,
Rob Nichols

Hi all,
I'll be seeing my regular optometrist in a couple of days and I'll be getting a prescription for new glasses (trifocals), but they don't have the ability to actually order the glasses, so I need to find a place where I can do that. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks so much,
Claudette
Hi All,
I just wanted to provide a quick update on the plants in the traffic circle. The plants definitely were stressed by the heat on Sunday which, given the multiple days of high temps, would be expected for any new plantings. However, I went out and checked on them all around 7:30 pm that night. Our volunteers (we have 1 or 2 per intersection and a volunteer coordinator) had watered them and they all had perked back up, and they looked better this week. The plants, containers, and soil were all donated by a local nursery. The staff there understood how and where they would be used and felt that the plants would do well there.
Please keep in mind that everyone - city staff, the HPCC board, and the HPCC volunteers - are all doing the best that they can. These types of interventions have been proven to make streets safer for all users and that's a good thing. Yes, the implementation has not been perfect. However, this is the first initiative of its kind in the city and DOMI staff is working hard to listen to and address the concerns being raised: they have had 2 public meetings, have a website for feedback, held an on-site meeting, and have a third public meeting scheduled. It will take some time for DOMI to get the signage right and for people to adjust to the traffic patterns. For those of you who have told me how much you already love them - thank you for reaching out. If that's not you, please remember that we are all on the same side - we all want people to be safe in our neighborhood - and we can have concerns and disagree without being disagreeable.
If you have feedback about the circles, DOMI is hosting another public Zoom meeting 6pm on Thursday, July 30th. They will review the pilot’s findings and the updated proposal for the neighborway. Here is the link to the Facebook event:

Hello!
Does anyone have any old skis or a couple of snowboards they're willing to part with? Doesn't matter what condition/if they work or not.
Thanks!
Rosa
As a community member who crosses at Callowhill and Euclid almost daily using my white cane or guide dog, I have noticesd some navigation adjustments that I have had to consider. I think the new traffic circles will require extra caution from drivers and pedestrians. Here are 2 things that I wanted to offer for drivers and pedestrians to think about while traveling through the Euclid Neighborways.
I will explain from my specific point of view as a visually impaired individual but this would be apllicable to many pedestrians and drivers.
1. While breaking the sight line
directly down the street might be effective to reduce speeding
It also puts me at risk for not being seen. When previously crossing this intersection I could identify an oncoming car and be assured that they would most likely stop at the stop sign. This gave the driver an opportunity to see me and gave me the clear opportunity to cross, often making contact with the driver so that they were aware that I might need a little extra time to cross. There is security in knowing that the driver can see you. With the current circle, not only does the driver not have to stop but they will be looking either to the left or the right as they go around the circle and will only see me when they are right near me and may not be prepared to stop if I am in the middle of crossing, even if they are going slowly. Also if there are tall plants in the middle that will further obscure the drivers ability to see a pedestrian.
2. When crossing with the circle I have noticed that cars and trucks get much closer to the edge of the sidewalk when going around the circle and that it is very tight with little room to adjust. My guide dog is trained to find the curb when we approach a street crossing and I also use the curb with my white cane to prepare to cross. If I stand at the curb to cross with the circle there is a good chance I could be hit. I have seen large trucks really struggle to get around the narrow circle so if a driver is not being careful they could go right up and over the curb.
I offer my experiences to you to share my unique way of moving In the world in hopes of keeping everyone safe.
Thank you for your consideration.
Mia
Hi all! Looking for a recommendation for someone to repair two ceiling patches in separate rooms, damaged by a since-repaired leaky roof. We can clear out and provide social distancing, too. Thanks in advance!
