As the Outreach Manager for the Homeless Children's Education Fund
(HCEF) I am so pleased that Councilman, Patrick Dowd and the Pittsburgh City
Council will be proclaiming Oct 15 - 23 as Homeless Children's Awareness Week.
Last school year 1,700 school-aged children and youth were identified
as experiencing homelessness in Allegheny County. HCEF has partnered with 17
agencies that serve families experiencing homelessness. Our mission is to
provided educational materials and opportunities for children in these shelters

so that they can keep up in school with their peers.
Homeless Children's Awareness Week events include:
Saturday, October 15th: 9:30 AM Stand Up and Run for
Homeless Children Challenging 5K Race in
Frick Park To participate in the 5K please register with Active.com at the link
below. The packet pick-up is on Friday, Oct 14th from 4:30-7 PM in the parking
lot directly behind the Society for Contemporary Crafts at the corner of 21st
and Smallman Streets in the Strip District, 15222 or at on Saturday morning
before race time between 8:30 – 9:30 AM in the Frick Park Environmental Center
parking lot on Beechwood near the intersection of Dallas and Forbes in Squirrel
Hill.
Saturday, October 15th: 5 PM HCEF is hosting a
Building Convergence Film Festival screening of Writing on the Berlin Wall:
Remembering the Berlin Wall a John Michalczyk film with panel and Q & A
to follow at CAPA High School, downtown.
Monday, October 17th: 6 PM An Education: True Stories of Unusual
Lessons Learned featuring experienced storytellers at the Cabaret in
Theatre Square
6 PM Mingle
7 PM Show
Thursday, October 20th: 5 PM Stand Up for
Homeless Children and Celebration
4:30 PM Volunteers arrive - Soldiers and Sailors lawn on corner of 5th Ave
and Bigelow.
5 - 5:15 PM Performance art installation
5:15 PM Celebration in Soldiers and Sailors main Lobby – guest speaker,
Roy Juarez & music by Lightning Box
