We are hiring a Director of the Kelso Museum of Near Eastern Archaeology at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary! This position oversees the care and conservation of the Museum’s collections, leads strategic planning and programming, and engages diverse audiences through exhibits, lectures, and educational initiatives that reflect the Seminary’s mission and values.

 

Essential Responsibilities Include:

- Oversee the care and conservation of two collections:

- A collection of more than 7,000 artifacts dating from the Chalcolithic to the Early Islamic period.

- The archives of 14 excavations conducted by Seminary archaeologists, eight of which brought artifacts to the Museum.

- Build a staff that brings complementary skills to the work of the Museum; oversee searches and the day-to-day work of the curator and volunteers (which may include research fellows, contract conservationists, contract archivists, and volunteer docents).

- Conduct research on the collection and maintain ties with scholars and institutions (ASOR, ACOR, AIA) engaged in the archaeology and cultural history of the Levant and the Middle East.

- Plan thematic and structural changes that broaden the historical scope of the Museum and its programming to include Arab, Muslim, and Bedouin presence in the Levant.

- Oversee a museum lecture series of two or more lectures annually by archaeologists and scholars working in areas relevant to the collections.
