Langston Hughes: Harlem’s Jazz Poet February 8, 7:30 PM • February 9, 4:00 PM Eastminster Presbyterian Church The Harlem Renaissance produced some of our most prolific and powerful cultural figures. Chief among them was Langston Hughes, a novelist, social activist, poet, and musician. Hughes was one of the earliest innovators of a new literary art form called jazz poetry, which emphasized folk and jazz rhythms, giving an air of improvisation to his works. He expressed the struggles of middle class African American life, with its challenges, joys and music.
