EdI'm sending this out to the list to remind folks that there is a good resource to find recycling programs anywhere in the US at www.earth911.com. Just enter your zip code and the item and viola the nearest recycle location will pop up!
Regarding your specific requests:
Go to Nike Reuse a shoe program at http://www.nikereuseashoe.com/ and look for your nearest drop off or mail them to Nike.
Regarding the medicines, this is more problematic. There was a pilot program that collected them and believe it or not burned them. I am concerned that breathing in the medicines is no better than having them in the water and is contributing to air pollution! (I wonder what GASP has to say about this?). I believe the CDC is recommending that you put your used medicines in a closable plastic bag and put it in the regular trash.

Subject: [Highland Park] Recycle Walking, Running Shoes & Disposal of Outdated Medications
I'm cleaning out closets and have some old running and walking shoes to discard. I seem to remember that someone or group was collecting them for recycling. Where do I take them?
I have some outdated medications that need to be disposed of. Does anyone know where we can do this?
