Below is the announcement about an important talk by Pitt Law professor Jules Lobel next Monday night about the use of solitary confinement in the US. Amnesty International has been working on this issue and has a current action dealing with Albert Woodfox who has been in solitary confinement for more than 40 years. The Louisiana authorities refuse to free him despite the fact that his conviction was overturned 3 times.

Lobel, Pitt Law Professor and Center for Constitutional Rights lawyer for Pelican Bay prisoners, will relate the inspiring story of inmates overcoming gang violence and racism as they fight for their human rights. Their struggle has included a hunger strike
against California’s arbitrary system of solitary confinement, which frequently locks down prisoners in isolation
for decades.
There will also be a presentation of current actions against solitary confinement in Pennsylvania and around the country and how citizens can help overturn this form of cruel and unusual punishment.
