Dear Neighbors –

            There has been a question regarding what can be posted to the Highland Park List Serve, and at March’s Monthly Board Meeting there was a request for clarification to this policy.  I asked Rudy Maceyko, our neighborhood Web Master, to please look into what had been stated originally, and to adapt it to our current needs.  Below are the current standards by which e-mail is moderated, and then passed on to the subscribers to the List Serve:

Purpose
News and information about Highland Park, a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Moderation Policy
The Highland Park Neighborhood list is moderated to keep messages on topic and to limit list traffic to a reasonable amount. Messages must be:

• about Highland Park, including its residents, organizations, businesses, and the park; or
• of specific interest to its residents, including issues relating to surrounding/connected communities such as the redevelopment in East Liberty.

The general rule is that messages that are not related to Highland Park or that continue a long sequence of replies may be rejected by the moderators. Harsh, offensive, or ill-formed messages may also be rejected.

Political or Commercial Messages
Messages of a political or commercial nature are permitted when they abide by the other guidelines listed here.

Don't assume that everyone in the neighborhood agrees with your position or interest in a particular topic. Just post your invitation to an open house, yard sale, special event in the neighborhood, or other appropriate opportunity, and keep it as brief and neutral as possible.

Please keep the frequency of these types of a message to a minimum.

There is no mechanism by which "equal time" for political candidates can be guaranteed because list content consists of posts made by individuals.

Attachments
Attachments are permitted but please limit their size and consider sending text instead of Word documents, etc. Please do not respond to posts on the list with unrelated mailings such as commercial solicitations.

Spam
The list server software automatically discards messages that look like spam. The moderators additionally have the task of reviewing messages to prevent otherwise unrecognized spam from being sent to list recipients.

Post Safely
When posting details about yourself, please keep in mind that subscribers have not been screened to ensure that they actually are your neighbors. Be smart about on-line communication and do not reveal your unpublished phone numbers or that you are going to be away from your home for an extended time.

Moderators
The moderators are volunteers who live right here in Highland Park. We donate our time and resources to maintain the list as a high-quality resource for the neighborhood. We gladly accept questions and comments about the way we run the list, but please be nice to us because we are volunteers and we use our judgment according to what we think are the best interests of the neighborhood. We make mistakes because we obviously aren't perfect--please don't take it personally!

Moderators do not edit posted content. Opinions expressed in list posts ultimately reflect the views of individuals in the neighborhood.

Moderators operate independently of the neighborhood non-profits.
