After reading Amy's post this morning and hearing about other risky behavior demonstrated by SPIN users this weekend, I reached out to the Director of the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI). I alerted her to the problems we're seeing and asked about their long term plans for the scooters, including if they have strategies to address the public safety issues they're causing. They said they'd host a meeting with neighborhood reps. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, feel free to send the HPCC feedback about the SPIN scooters (positive or negative) so that I have a better sense for what's going on with them and how people feel about them. Looking for other families with students at Sterrett Classical Academy!

Hi Neighbors! I heard Pgh Public may be eliminating bussing for older students living less than 3 miles from their school, which means Sterrett students who live in Highland Park may not get bus assignments. (or we may, who knows, it's PPS). In case there's no school bus option, I wanted to put some feelers out to see if there are other families in the neighborhood with Sterrett students so we could see about arranging carpools. I have a 7th grader, who did spend some days in the building last year, and my friend has a 6th grader starting there. Thanks all! Martha (ps: for anyone with a 5th grader in the fall who will be "shopping" for middle/high schools, we've been pleased with Sterrett, all things considered, for her first year there. It's a nice, small school that is just grades 6-8 in the building, which my daughter likes. It has a mix of magnet and feeder students, offers advanced math and ELA classes and has a great team of teachers, and the principal and vice principal are solid and know what they are doing. SPIN Scooters in the neighborhood and park

This morning while jogging in Highland Park, I encountered four children (ages approximately 8 to 16) riding SPIN Scooters on Reservoir Drive. One nearly hit me, and then went through a Stop sign; others were riding the scooters on the grass and sidewalks; none were wearing helmets; and two were sharing one scooter. It seems the easy access to these vehicles is making them an attractive new toy for some who are not mature/responsible enough to use them. (Anybody with a phone and $1 can rent them.) According to the SPIN rules posted on the city's 311 website: 1) no one under 18 is permitted to use them; 2) they are not permitted in parks; 3) riders should wear helmets; 4) riders must obey traffic laws. Obviously, there were numerous violations here, but where's the enforcement? Who's responsible? The honor code isn't enough apparently. Not only that, but I've seen 8 of these scooters left throughout the neighborhood, most illegally, and taking up needed parking spaces for cars. They are becoming a nuisance. I filed complaints to the city's 311 website, and I urge everyone who has seen such violations and illegally discarded scooters to do the same. Maybe more voices will make the city reconsider this ill-thought out program. Thank you. Amy

Upcoming movie shoot on Elgin Street

Hi All, Just a heads up that next week (Aug 2 - 5), a film crew will be preparing to do some filming on Elgin Street of the new Billy Porter production, "What If?". Shooting will occur on August 6, 9, and 17 - 20; post production strike/clean-up may continue through Aug 26. Parking and traffic (including foot traffic) will be impacted intermittantly on Elgin between N. Euclid and Mellon, plus one block north and south of Elgin on N. Euclid and N. St. Clair. The production team should have already notified residents of these blocks of the specific parking and traffic limitations. Some production vehicles will be parked in the parking lot east of the park entry gardens, but the majority of the vehicles will be based in East Liberty. Looking for a videocamera that uses Mini DV or DVC

I'm hoping to borrow or buy (I only need it temporarily) a camcorder that uses DVC mini cassettes—also called Mini DV (they look like tiny VHS tapes, 2 inches by 3 inches). I have tapes from one that I can't locate and I want to use the camera to play them so I can digitize them. I think my camera was circa-2005. Let me know if you have one hanging around that you'd want to loan or sell to me. I have a few unopened cassettes that I'll happily give you when I'm finished if you are still using your camera. bike rack wanted to borrow or rent

Hello, neighbors. Last attempt to borrow or rent a 3 or 4 bike hitch-mounted bike rack for an upcoming vacation. I would prefer a platform or tray style rack (similar to a Thule T2) with the ability to lock the rack to the hitch and lock the bikes to the rack.
