NatureLAB Garden Build Day at Food Glorious Food Education Innovations will be launching NatureLAB in September in Highland Park (We hope at Fulton Academy!) Food Glorious Food has graciously donated the use of their backyard for a garden oasis to get us started. We need your help to get things ready for the fall. Food and beverages provided by Food Glorious Food! We'd like to invite you to a garden build day. We need as many hands as we can get! We also need tools. . .bring them along for the day, or them a donation to NatureLAB. If it can be used in a garden, we can use it. You can make a small tax-deductible donation towards NatureLAB at www.educationinnovations.org <http://www.educationinnovations.org/> Food and beverages provided by Food Glorious Food! Also, if you have items for the neighborhood yard sale but don't want to go through the hassle of having a sale yourself, why not donate it to us. We'll sell it and count it towards your contribution to NatureLAB. What we don't sell, we'll give to Goodwill. It works all the way around-you get to clean up round the house and get a tax write-off for it, and we get to raise money for local educational programs. TOUR OF NEW POLICE HEADQUARTERS BUILDING "Major Crimes" is one of the classes offered to the students enrolled in the Citizens Police Academy training. One of the topics covered is Crime Scene Investigations (CSI). As noted previously these classes are taught by the top police professionals who train the Pittsburgh Police. This class was extremely well presented by Major Crimes Lt. Scott Schubert and included foot print and other crime scene demonstrations by CSI detectives. It is too late to register for this term but Lt. Schubert is conducting tours of the new Police Headquarters building which will be interesting and educational because his expertise ranges from homicides, rape, robbery, aggravated assaults, and burglary, to larceny, thefts, vehicle thefts and arson. This is a great chance to learn about how these investigations are conducted and to see the CSI equipment and the rest of the facility which includes the Media Room, the Child Friendly Room, the Observation Room, the Family Waiting Room, the Computer Crimes Unit and much more. Like the CPA training this tour is free, educational and well worth your time. Tours are tentatively planned for Sundays or Mondays after 5:00 p.m. Invitations have been given to the last and to the current CPA classes. Elaine Caparelli is finishing up the CPA alumna database and plans to send notices to them as well. We have arranged to include members of the Wired Blocks Network as well. [Highland Park] Research focus group for Highland Park residents

Hi all, I am presently supervising graduate students in the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management, Carnegie Mellon University, on a research initiative to learn more about community attitudes regarding local facilities that provide important services yet are often seen as controversial. On Thursday, May 13, 2004, 7:30 PM at St. Andrews Church, our research team will hold a public focus group session to learn more about residents' views and concerns in this area. The goal of our project is to design a process that will help policy makers make better decisions regarding location of residential facilities that provide important services. We are seeking a diverse group of 10-15 adults (18 years or older) to participate in a 90-minute focus group discussion to share views on community-based corrections initiatives. The results of our study will be presented at a later date to participants. Participants will receive compensation for their time. [Highland Park] Summer Camp Program: Kids Classical Academy

Hi list, I'm sending this on behalf of Rozi Epstein, teacher at Linden Academy, a Pittsburgh Public Schools German magnet elementary school, and director of a summer enrichment program called Kids Classical Academy. Since the camp is taking place at Peabody High School this summer, Ms. Epstein thought Highland Park residents with school-age kids might be interested in this program. Michael --------------- Kids Classical Academy Summer Camp, 2004 (June 21 - August 13) is a Fine Arts Camp for children K to 8th grade. (8:00AM to 4:00PM with extended day until 6:00PM) We offer a program of sports, and swimming along with Creative Writing, Spanish, German, English as a Second Language, French, Drama, Art and private lessons in violin and piano. Our faculty is made up entirely of certified Pittsburgh Public School teachers. Last year our camp included kids from over 22 different countries. Tuition is very reasonable ($1200 for 8 weeks) which also includes private music lessons, and extended day. This summer, camp will be held at Peabody High School. Hello Thank you for helping us get a great turnout at the Act 47 Review Board Meeting--over 200 people from throughout the city packed into the Calvary Church. We need your help to do it again. Although this time we need to get our message across that we as City tax payers can not bear a tax increase or cuts in city services. The last meeting talked a lot about all non-profit should pay taxes and what city taxes could be raised, instead of our message that we as city residents can not take any more and that the answer is creating a tax structure that is fair, which means everyone who works in the City pays their fair share instead of sticking it to the residents. The Final Meeting of Act 47 Review Board for comment from City Residents will be at 7 pm on May 5 at the Pitt Student Union, orange building located across from the Cathedral of Learning on Bigelow Boulevard. It is imperative that as many people as possible attend these meetings and voice your concerns. If they do not hear from us, we will have little room to complain.
