I recently received mail about opportunities for folks to take a course known as "Citizens Police Academy", or to volunteer to proctor candidates for the Pgh Bureau of Police. I am sorry this is such a long email, but I wanted to put all the info in. Bob 1. The City of Pittsburgh Public Safety Department is looking for individuals 18 years and older to volunteer in helping the Civil Service Dept proctor 200 candidates for the Pgh Bureau of Police. Each candidate has to participate in four different Physical exams. Volunteers are needed to help with writing down scores, using a stop watch, and rotating candidates around to each physical exam as needed. Equipment will be provided. The testing will take place at South High School (9th and Carson) on Monday September 13 thru Friday, September 17, 2004, from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm each day. They are looking for 15 volunteers each day. You will be paid $50.00 per day, and can volunteer for one or many days. Casual dress is required and you must be able to perform some very limited physical activity. You can not be a current City employee to volunteer. Orientation will be Friday, September 10th from 1-4 pm. you will also be paid $25.00 for that day also. The Pgh Bureau of Police, Dept of Public Safety is once again offering to residents of Pgh a 12-week course known as the "Citizen's Police Academy". The course is designed to reflect the actual training that a Police Officer Recruit must undergo prior to being sworn as a Pgh Police Officer. This is not a certification course for a person to become a sworn police officer. The training will increase the participant's knowledge in police operations and give insight enabling them to become a valuable asset to their own safety and security. Applicants will be exposed to many diverse facets of law enforcement and CPR certification. Qualified Instructors, Detectives, Supervisors and Officers will teach each session. The class will be held every Wednesday evening from 6-9 pm, with the exception of the four hour CPR training, starting Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at the Pgh Police Academy, 1395 Washington Blvd. Application deadline is Friday, September 3, 2004. You must be 18 or older and a background check will be done prior to acceptance to the program. Class size is limited to 25 individuals. [Highland Park] Graduation pin found

Actually this pin was found in front of my house last year. I had hoped someone would come looking for it. It is a small ceramic graduation cap with a metal "2003" suspended from it. The pin is attached to a card that reads: Congratulations You're Always Top Of The Class Class of 2003 >From P. T. [Highland Park] Reservoir of Jazz "Thank You"

Thank you to everyone who help out with the Reservoir of Jazz...Ollie, Bob, Rudy, Sal, Maria, Indigo and anyone else I forgot. We had a tremendous turn out and it really felt great to keep the ROJ alive and running. Next year? Who knows what the city's situation will be! We had well over 850 plus people this week and each week we grow approx 200-250 per crowd. If you attended then you know that the crowds love every minute of it. Next year with the fountain up and running I hope that we are able to continue one way or another-how nice would it be to have even more people come hang out in Highland Park for the day. Thanks again and it was fun being a part of keeping ROJ alive and running. Tania

Education Innovations, Inc. says thank you to all the wonderful people who got NatureLAB to a good start at our 5th Avenue site. We filled over 10 trash bags with garbage that had been discarded on the lot (and many more trash bags waiting to be filled!.) We cleared away huge weeds, and planted 50 square feet of fall vegetables. We'll be starting NatureLAB for 4th through 8th graders in September. The 11 people who helped out today will make the work a lot easier. Keep an eye out for a greenhouse and stage build day coming this fall. If you're interested in enrolling your children in NatureLAB, give us a call. (We're also looking for corporate sponsors. Psst. [Highland Park] host families for international students

Attention to the Highland Park Community: CIEE, the Council on International Educational Exchange, a non-profit, non-governmental organization known as a global leader in international education and exchanges since its start in 1947, is looking to place 5 more international high school students into homes in Pittsburgh for this fall school year. These students are from Brazil, Thailand, Russia, the Ukraine, and Japan. A few students from China may be arriving in a few weeks also to attend high school in the Unites States for one year. I am reaching out to community members that may be interested in being a host familiy for the academic school year. Host responsibilities include providing three meals a day to a student, as well as a bed of their own. Students can share a room with other household members. All families are welcome to inquire, as well as single people, provided that they house a same sex student. Students visiting the United States through CIEE are looking to develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world.
