We are happy to share the following announcement with you. Please help us spread the word as this workshop is a 100% volunteer effort. Thank you. -- Landscapes & Hardscapes: Adding value to your home and community Saturday, March 21, 2009 1:00 - 3:30 PM Mifflin Avenue United Methodist Church, 905 Mifflin Ave., at Whitney Ave. The Regent Square Civic Association, Greater Park Place Neighborhood Association, North Point Breeze Community Development Corporation, and Whitney Park Neighbors are partnering again with the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh to put on another FREE workshop for homeowners interested in improving the value of their homes. This year's workshop will look at making exterior improvements to the landscape and hardscapes around our homes. Presenters will provide information on: - good landscape design - stormwater management, - street trees, - the use of native plants in the landscapes, - and more! As it was last year, there will be presentations from approximately 1:00 - 2:00, followed by an open time for participants to talk with the presenters and others from the organizations they represent, as well as visit information tables from others offering relevant products or services. In addition, landscape architects from the Community Design Center will offer a limited number of free "mini-consultations" for residents who bring pictures of areas they want to develop. I have a "Merlin" magnifying reader for the visually impaired to sell. My mother had Macular Degeneration and found it quite useful. It sits on a desk or table and has several magnifications. It's in very good condition. She originally paid $3000.00 but I am asking $1000.00 or best offer. I also have her gently used wheelchair. It is small as she was very tiny so it might be good for a teen or small adult. It is missing the footrests. I am asking $25.00 or best offer for the wheelchair as well. Hello, I am fostering another cat for Animal Friends. She's a beautiful brown tabby, about 2-3 years old. She is a really nice cat, one of the nicest I've ever fostered. She is friendly, easygoing and confident, tolerant of respectful children, and gets along really well with other cats. She has been spayed and is up to date on all her shots. Her name is Stormy and she knows it, but her name could be changed as well. The adoption would have to be through Animal Friends because the foster is through them, but I would be happy to have any interested family come to my house and meet her. Thanks! Melissa Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do. Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchasedCocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk . Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly. Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.' This Snopes site gives the following information:http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called ' Theobromine' . It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of th eobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffei n e and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed th e presence of lethal amounts of theobromine. PLEASE GIVE THIS THE WIDEST DISTRIBUTION! !!
