[Highland Park] The Walk to Cure Psoriasis - This Saturday in Schenley Park

Hi Neighbors - Just wanted to advise you all of the Walk to Cure Psoriasis in Pittsburgh, which is taking place this Saturday in Schenley Park. Psoriasis is the most common auto-immune disease in the US, affecting more than 7 million people nationwide (and an estimated 125 million people worldwide). It's a chronic, hereditary disease that can (and often does) have a huge impact on the quality of life of those who suffer with it. In addition, many sufferers also develop psoriatic arthritis at some point in their life. The National Psoriasis Foundation funds research into treatments and cures for both diseases, as well as offering patient advocacy, support, and education. My family and I will be walking. Psoriasis has had a huge impact on our lives (my father, son, and I have lesions over most of our bodies). Below is my personal note about why I'm walking and why this cause is so important to me and my family. As of this morning, the walk itself isn't quite at 50% of its fundraising goal, so if this is a cause that's important to you or someone you know, please consider making a donation, no matter how small. But there is a problem. A problem we’re walking to help solve. A problem that has touched our lives in huge ways. A disease that has played a huge role in making me the woman I am, for better and for worse. This walk is about solving that problem. About making a better life. About giving hope to people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. This walk is about a teen-aged girl who tried to be dispassionate about how ugly she was. Who tried not to care that people stared at her in public. Who wrote plays about the struggle not to explode with rage at the way society treated her because of her skin. Who hated her appearance and herself. Who allowed her skin to become the armor that protected her from the world and who has spent her adult life trying not to be afraid to be seen. This is about a little boy who was tormented by his peers, called “Scab King” and “Snake Face,” who learned that interacting with his classmates meant rejection and teasing and bullying, and who was told by a teacher that if he couldn’t stop picking at his itchy skin, he couldn’t stay in her class. Who wept with gratitude when he got home from his first outing with a group of children who were kind to him and who didn’t stare or call names. This walk is about millions of people. Not about just the little girl I remember being or the boy I’m raising but about a host of children and adults whose battle with psoriasis has meant having to fight, and fight hard, not to believe that their skin makes them ugly or that no one will love them because of the way they look. Millions of people who have to choose between hiding their skin or tolerating the stares and questions of strangers. Millions of people who try not to call attention to themselves. And it’s about the children and adults who, like me and my sister, have developed psoriatic arthritis. Who, on any given day, may wake up in pain and go through their day in pain and struggle to sleep in spite of the pain. Who are steadily losing the ability to do everyday tasks. Whose joints are deteriorating because the currently-available treatments are too expensive for them or just don't work for them, or who have sacrificed the protection of their immune system because the medication that gives them relief also compromises their immune response. It’s about people who have been told there’s no cure, who have tried everything – from immune-compromising injections to chemotherapy medications, from light booths to tar baths, from extreme dietary changes to just plain praying – and are losing hope that they’ll ever find the thing that works for them. This walk is about finding a cure and restoring our hope. I hope you can find it in your heart to support us. Thanks, Julie

Hey, Please come down Saturday morning, we will be selling Axel's organic soft pretzels. Axel is from Germany and lives on Jackson St. He just dropped off a few samples, believe me when I say this, there is not a pretzel in town that compares to these. I just got done scarfing down 2 of them, and they are amazing, AND ORGANIC..........There will be a limited number this week to see how the sell. He recommends the be eaten as close to the time they come out of the oven as possible, but will reheat very nicely. INGREDIENTS: organic unbleached flour with wheat germ filtered water organic sunflower oil salt yeast malt powder These are true german style pretzels, I believe they are going to be a real hit. [Highland Park] Found eyeglasses

Tuesday afternoon, my daughter found a pair of women's glasses on the sidewalk near the corner of Sheridan and Bryant. They have small oval lenses. Hi neighbors. When I got home from work today, I noticed that our pet rabbit is acting strangely (spinning, and tilting his head to one side). After some online research, we think he might have wry neck. Are there any experienced rabbit owners out there who have dealt with a similar situation? Recommendations on how to help him? This bunny is pretty new to our household, and we haven't taken him to a vet yet. Do you have any recommendations for vets who treat rabbits nearby? A convertible sofa that is covered in a tan twill fabric. It measures 76" wide and pulls out into a full-size bed. It is in excellent condition and is less than 2 years old. I have had a throw on it since it was new. Selling price is $225.00/OBO which includes a set of sheets (used once) and a cotton blanket (never used). 2. A double-dresser from "Pottery Barn". It is solid wood and honey oak in color. It has 8 drawers and measures 66" long, 20" deep and 35-1/2" high. It's in excellent condition. Selling price is $250.00/OBO. 3. An entertainment credenza from "Sauder" that is less than 2 years old is dark oak in color. It has 2 shelves and 2 drawers. It measures 43-1/2" wide 18-3/4" deep and 21" high. In excellent condition, the selling price is $100.00/OBO. 4. An island/buffet that has a black painted base and solid wood butcher block style top. It has 2 drawers and 2 cabinets. Each cabinet has an adjustable shelf in it. The island/buffet can be wheeled around because it is on casters. It is less than 2 years old and is in excellent condition. It measures 43" wide (across the top) and if you include the 2 handles on each side (which can be removed) it adds another 6" making it around 49" wide in total. It is 17-1/2" deep and 35" high. The selling price is $175.00/OBO. 5. A three-piece carpet set that includes an area rug 9' 6" by 7' 6"'; a runner that is 7' by 2', and a doormat that is 20" by 32". The predominant colors in the rugs are a light tan (almost ivory), with shades of brown, green, a bluish gray, and burgundy. Less than 2 years old, all three rugs are in very good condition. Padding for all 3 is free. The selling price for the set of 3 is $60.00/OBO. 6. A solid cherry "Butler" style coffee table measuring 40" wide, 28" deep and 17" high. In good shape with a high polish. [Highland Park] Lost ring

I need your help! While walking a dog along N.Highland Avenue today towards the park, my engagement ring somehow slipped off of my finger. I was on the sidewalk, and lost it somewhere between Jackson and a little ways past Browning. It is not a very valuable ring, in a monetary sense, but it has been in my fiance's family for over sixty years. I am heartbroken, and hoping that if anyone finds it, will return it to me for a $100 reward. I traced my steps for nearly two hours today, with no luck. If anyone happens to be out walking and would keep their eyes open, or has already found it, please, please, please, contact me as soon as possible. Thank you, Jennifer
