Hello. I will be moving to Pittsburgh this summer for a one year academic post. I am hoping to find an apartment in (or very near) the Highland Park area, so I thought it'd be worth a shot to send out an email to the listserve. I have included further details below. [Highland Park] ants

I sent a post last month about a problem with tiny ants in both kitchens of my duplex. I received many responses - most recommending boric acid powder or products from Home Depot. I had forgotten to mention that I had already tried ant traps and Home Depot products before I called an exterminator. I was familiar with boric acid powder. It is a drying agent - when the bugs walk across it, it sucks the moisture from their bodies. Unfortunately, it is useless outside. Even dew saturates it and renders it useless. I chose Samuel Creeger from this response: EC Pest Control Squirrel Hill. Samuel Creeger 412.422.6757 He's also top rated on Angie's List. I've used him several times, and once for ants in a huge nest in my front yard. He's environmentally conscious, extremely thorough, and reasonable. I've recommended him to several friends, and everyone thinks he is great. I also think he is great. He spent an hour inspecting our kitchens, the outside of house, and our cellar. He identified the ants - honey and odorous house ants. He said that they were difficult to remove - and that spraying would not work - that they would avoid the spray and return when the spray dissipated (I learned that the hard way!). He placed a gel that the ants would eat and take back to their nests. And then, he gave me the name of the gel he used so that I could buy it online and use it myself - rather than paying him to return! He was friendly and thorough. So far, I've just seen a few dead or dying ants. I'll use the gel when I receive it to keep the ants away. Jan

Does anyone have an 1/8 size cello for a child to play? We'd like to get one for our daughter so she can get familiar with the instrument before taking lessons in the future. We'd prefer to get one used rather than buy one new and have her outgrow it in a few years. Any leads would be very much appreciated! Thanks so much, Heather

PSA Tone it UP!.jpgThe Pittsburgh Society of Artists Guild (PSA) presents an exhibit at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PCA) titled "Tone It UP". This exhibit, juried by Greg Harrison opens to the public with a reception at PCA on Friday May 11, 2012 from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. In light of the recent heated political discourse and violence like the shootings in Arizona this past year and the Occupy Movement, government and media have suggested that we the public need to "Tone it DOWN." In response to this, Pittsburgh Society of Artists presents an exhibition asking artists to Tone It UP! PSA challenges our members and members of the other guilds to step outside of their comfort zones, pump up the volume and be loud by creating works that express what you the members are truly passionate about. The subject might be political, environmental, cultural, etcetera. The options are open as long as the artists' passions are expressed in the work. Juror Greg Harrison is currently the Chair of the Department of Art & Design at California University of PA. He is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh with an Associate degree and received his Bachelor of Arts from California University of PA. He then completed his Masters in Fine Arts at Edinboro University of PA.
