He is a researcher relocating to Pittsburgh who needs a comfortable and safe room with basic amenities and wifi, before August 1st. He will be working at Shadyside UPMC so the commute from Highland Park isn't too far. Here’s a little background on the event, which is conducted annually on the first Tuesday of August. This year, National Night Out will be celebrated on Tuesday August 1. | | | | | | | | | | National Night Out (NNO) began over 30 years ago. The event has been held annually since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. National Night Out began simply with neighbors turning on their porch lights and sitting on their porches or in front of their homes, while engaging their neighbors and meeting their local police officers who patrol their neighborhoods. The very first National Night Out involved 2.5 million residents across 400 communities in 23 states! | | | | | | | | | | The event was initially designed and meant to increase awareness about local police, public safety programs in communities such as drug prevention, block watches, community safety councils, and other anti-crime efforts. Caring Connections for YOUth works with 211, so if a kid or a family in Allegheny County needs help for things like a conflict between a parent and child, truancy, fighting or even minor drug possession, all they have to do is call 211, press 3 and be connected with an operator instead of the cops. The program was developed based on data collected by Gwen's Girls. They looked at the numbers of juveniles who are arrested, cited or referred to juvenile court for minor offenses. They found that not knowing who to call for resources and support was one reason young people ended up in the system, when really they needed help. Mobile apps and websites now enable you to view and share local, national and international crime information in real time with the click of a few buttons. And the most sensational stores usually generate the most views and are shown more frequently. However, for users of these apps, the resulting fear can lead them to avoid going out in the evenings or heighten their fear of strangers - the opposite of the kind of social trust and cohesion necessary for long-term crime prevention.
