Bear update

The 250 pound black bear that was hanging out in the neighborhood over by Heberton was sedated and air lifted out. My understanding is that it wasn't hurt and they plan to relocate it to more suitable habitat outside of Allegheny County.

This week's gardening class.

Hey all! After a few weeks' break, classes are BACK! This week, I will be doing an in-person class at my home. (I'm going to do my best to also make it a virtual session.) We will be OUTSIDE, in shade. (If it rains, class will go 100% virtual, as there is not enough room in my home for social distancing). The topic is: TRANSPLANTING and STARTING NEW PLANTS FROM YOUR OLD ONES! We will be covering best practice for transplanting every kind of plant, including fruit trees, roses, tomatoes, black-eyed susans, etc. We will also cover some methods of asexual (not from seed) propagation, such as using cuttings, layering and mounding. Most plants can be reproduced this way, and it's an excellent money-saver! So, if you'd really like to have more hydrangea, apple trees, tomatoes, raspberries, roses, etc: come on down! There is enough space in my backyard to allow for proper social distancing for 8 students, so PLEASE let me know if you plan to attend. I will then send you my address. (RSVPs for virtual attendance are appreciated, but not necessary.) If you attend in person: Wear a mask. This is not optional. Nitrile gloves will be provided. There is ample street parking. If you have plants that need to be transplanted, feel free to bring them along. I can provide many basic plastic pots up to 2 gallon, but no decorative/fancy ones. Those who attend will go home with the plants & cuttings they've worked on (more available for sale to all!) Class is $15, free if it's a hardship. This boy is wayyy too sweet to be stuck in a shelter, living out the rest of his kitten hood! This guy is 6-7 months old, neutered, FeLV/FIV negative, up to date on vaccines, and the SWEETEST BOY EVER! He and his brother Fuzz came to us as strays. His brother has been adopted but no one has been interested in poor Squeaks. He is a perfect orange and white shorthair. He is very sweet, will head bonk, purr, snuggle, and give little love bites. He is perfectly content napping the day away with you. AND this guy has a sponsor! That’s right, his adoption fee of $125 will be waived thanks to his generous sponsor! All you need to do is fill out an application. we really want to see this sweet guy find his forever home. He loves everyone and gets along well with other kitties. I’m worried there will not be room anywhere since we are smack in the middle of kitten season. We do not have enough fosters to foster all the adults we have. Black bear in the neighborhood

I just want to confirm that a black bear has been seen in the neighborhood near the park around Heberton. It's my understanding that the police, Animal Control, and the Game Warden are on site and at least some of the roads are closed in that area. If you live in that area, please stay inside and keep children and pets inside for a while. If you don't live in that area, please don't go check it out. Things will go better for everyone - the bear, the public, and the professionals on-site - if the bear does not get agitated and the experts have the space they need to respond. Thank you!
