Hi Neighbors! If anyone is interested in birds, there are a couple of Merlins (according to the Merlin app!) up in the trees near St. Clair and Welston Way. We've seen them and heard them for the past few days. I'm thinking maybe they are nesting here? Apparently they are rare in our area, and it's even more rare that they would do more than just pass through. It would be great to get some pictures of them, if anyone has a good zoom camera! Free landscaping plants

We're re-landscaping our backyard, and are getting rid of some of the plants that are there now. If you'd like any of these plants, you can come dig them up today or Monday after 4 pm. I have some old pots that you can use to move them. Solomon Seal - likes shade Daylily bulbs - gorgeous & hardy; will spread and fill in spots many other plants won't grow Common boxwood shrubs - these were planted in a row close together, so once dug up, the individual plants may be uneven or have bare sides. However, I asked my landscaper about them and he said that if replanted and given space, they should fill out. Bamboo - We're removing bamboo that crept into our yard from a neighboring yard because it spreads and is destructive. If you'd like to cut stalks to dry and use in your garden or for crafts, there's plenty. Text me if you're interested - thanks! Stephanie 412-339-3873

NEXT PROGRAM: THURSDAY, MAY 17, 10 AM SUCCESSION PLANTING AND YEAR-ROUND GARDENING Presenter: Barb Kline, Master Gardener Location: Brooks Hall, St. Andrew’s Church, 5801 Hampton Street Pittsburgh PA 15206 Gardening is not necessarily a summer-only activity. The growing season in Western PA usually refers to the number of days between the last spring frost and the first frost in the fall. Typical spring frost can occur between April 1-June 1, while fall frosts can occur anytime between September 1- October 31. This is a wide range and specific weather patterns need to be observed. But with planning and some aids, it is possible to grow a variety of crops from April-October and beyond. Barb Kline is an Allegheny Penn State Master Gardener. She graduated from Phipps master gardener program in 2002 and joined Penn State master gardeners in 2009. Barb co-owned and operated an organic urban farm in Pittsburgh for more than a decade. She had the honor of being invited to attend the second international Slow Food conference called Terra Madre, in Turino, Italy, in 2006. She continues to be inspired by this experience. A passion stemming from the conference is helping preserve the genetic diversity of the seed supply by growing heirloom vegetables and saving seed. She has taught classes and lectured on a variety of sustainable gardening practices, including succession planting. HPGC programs and tours are free to HPGC members. Hello neighbors, your local community doc here! We are so excited to continue our 6th (!) season of Walk with a Doc in Highland Park. If you aren’t familiar, Walk with a Doc is a national organization <https://walkwithadoc.org/who-we-are/our-story/> and we’ve had a chapter in HP since 2020. We start with a quick chat about a health topic and then take a 45 minute, walk at your own pace, free community walk around the reservoir.
