NEXT PROGRAM: THURSDAY, MAY 17, 10 AM SUCCESSION PLANTING AND YEAR-ROUND GARDENING Presenter: Barb Kline, Master Gardener Location: Brooks Hall, St. Andrew’s Church, 5801 Hampton Street Pittsburgh PA 15206 Gardening is not necessarily a summer-only activity. The growing season in Western PA usually refers to the number of days between the last spring frost and the first frost in the fall. Typical spring frost can occur between April 1-June 1, while fall frosts can occur anytime between September 1- October 31. This is a wide range and specific weather patterns need to be observed. But with planning and some aids, it is possible to grow a variety of crops from April-October and beyond. Barb Kline is an Allegheny Penn State Master Gardener. She graduated from Phipps master gardener program in 2002 and joined Penn State master gardeners in 2009. Barb co-owned and operated an organic urban farm in Pittsburgh for more than a decade. She had the honor of being invited to attend the second international Slow Food conference called Terra Madre, in Turino, Italy, in 2006. She continues to be inspired by this experience. A passion stemming from the conference is helping preserve the genetic diversity of the seed supply by growing heirloom vegetables and saving seed. She has taught classes and lectured on a variety of sustainable gardening practices, including succession planting. HPGC programs and tours are free to HPGC members. The city’s largest yard sale is back! This year’s Highland Park Yard Sale will take place on Sunday, June 8th, and sales will start at 9am. Like most years in the past, the yard sale will happen on the same day as the Bryant Street Festival, which will begin at 10:30am and run until 3pm, so please invite your friends and family! Hello neighbors, your local community doc here! We are so excited to continue our 6th (!) season of Walk with a Doc in Highland Park. If you aren’t familiar, Walk with a Doc is a national organization <https://walkwithadoc.org/who-we-are/our-story/> and we’ve had a chapter in HP since 2020. We start with a quick chat about a health topic and then take a 45 minute, walk at your own pace, free community walk around the reservoir. Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh

Hello Neighbors, I found a little baby bird in my driveway today, without a nest or mama bird in sight, and a friend suggested taking it to the Wildlife Animal Rescue in Verona. If you come across an animal that needs help and you don't know what to do with it - they're a great option. I was able to walk right into the clinic with the bird in a little cardboard box and they put him right into an incubator.
