The gown giveaway kickoff begins on Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Project Prom Shop, 10 Duff Road, Penn Hills. The gown giveaway continues Monday, March 27, from 3 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 30, from 3 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guests must register in advance for an available timeslot and are asked to bring only one friend or family member to accompany them. To be part of Project Prom, high school students must live in Allegheny County and qualify for a free or reduced school lunch. A student is also eligible if a household member is on active military duty or a veteran. There will be an assortment of free, currently styled dresses of all sizes and colors available. Teens will be able to select from brand-new and gently used gowns. Dresses have been made available thanks to generous donations from residents, local dress shops One Enchanted Evening in Zelienople and DressHaute at South Hills Village, and online store Sydney’s Closet. There will also be a selection of shoes and accessories to accompany the dresses. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with the shopping experience. This begins and ends with Lifeguard Recruitment. Recruiting, training and certifying lifeguards is paramount to a successful Outdoor Pool Season and happy Pittsburgh swimmers. “I am proud of the work CitiParks is doing to continue to open pools safely each summer,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “CitiParks has been working directly with the Pittsburgh Public Schools CTE program to launch a lifeguard academy in order to provide new pathways for kids to have good summer jobs at our pools this summer.” The CitiParks Aquatics Team recruits, trains and certifies Lifeguards for the City of Pittsburgh every year. Since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the task of onboarding lifeguards has given us new challenges, with the biggest one still looming: Recruiting enough Lifeguards to open the City of Pittsburgh’s Outdoor Pools. In 2021 we were able to open 8, and in 2022 we saw 12 pools open. For 2023, we would like to open as many as possible, but this is dependent on how many lifeguards we are able to bring onboard. “We continue to work hard to garner increased interest in becoming a CitiParks Lifeguard. Hourly pay rates have increased from last year and will range from $16.48 - $19.05 per hour, based on experience,” said Kathryn Vargas, Department of Parks and Recreation Director. Additionally, Citiparks teamed up with the PPS CTE program this fall to host a lifeguard academy at Westinghouse High School. This experience provided an opportunity for high school students involved in the health careers and Public Safety focused CTE program to learn to swim and learn about what it takes to become a lifeguard. Moving into the spring Citiparks is looking to provide additional opportunities for students to get in the water and train with support from our lifeguards. Lifeguards must be City of Pittsburgh residents, at least 16 years old by September 5, 2023 and willing to work at any CitiParks Outdoor Pool.
