The City of Pittsburgh’s Public Safety Department strives to help victims of crime through The Office of Victim Assistance Services, which connects victims to any type of service they might need, including crisis intervention, referrals, information and advocacy. “As a victim of crime, you’ve just experienced trauma, an unexpected trauma,” said Victim Services Coordinator Alexandra Abboud. “At the flip of a switch, your whole life has changed—the way you see the world, the way you interact with the world, the way you lived your day to life has changed. And (victims) don’t know where to go and they don’t what to do. They need guidance to get them through this and to say, okay, what is our next step?” Abboud checks crime reports daily to identify victims of crime, contact them and offer support. Any other victims seeking resources can now find it on the City’s newly-launched Victim Assistance website <https://pittsburghpa.gov/publicsafety/victim-assistance-services>, which provides contacts to the Office and numerous other city and regional resources. “Victims of crime experience trauma from the incident itself and trauma from the barriers encountered when accessing systems that were created to provide support and resources,” said Shatara Murphy, Public Safety Assistant Director, Community Affairs. “The Victim Assistance Office is the support that families need, helping to eliminate some of those barriers and connect them to service providers and support. This isn’t just a warm hand off. The office is dedicated to the victim and their family and will be by their side throughout the process. When Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich created this office and asked me to manage it, we were clear that we didn’t just want to be another resource. We will serve as a partner to the community and we are committed to that partnership.” Mayor William Peduto said the effort is part of the City’s goal of helping all residents. "Public Safety provides many services but at the department's heart is one main goal, and that is to be there for people in need of help. Having a coordinator in place whose sole job is providing assistance to victims is a major part of the City's efforts to give help to all, and especially those who are most vulnerable,” Mayor Peduto said. Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said he is proud of the work of the Victims Assistance Office, as it speaks to the City- and Department-wide desire to put others first. “Public Safety is a dynamic department that doesn’t only include First Responders who save lives daily in times of urgency and emergency,” Hissrich said. “It also includes compassionate people who methodically consider the long-term needs of those who need help, and then take steps to provide it.” Abboud, who started in her position on Aug. 3, 2020, said her goal is to help victims throughout the process, which often means multiple follow-up contacts. “They need somebody to talk to, somebody to listen to them and say, ‘I’m here for you. I got you, I’m on your side. What are your needs? We’ll get through this together,” she said. Fwd: Health Department Extends Eligibility for Its Vaccination Sites

FYI - - - To sign up for vaccines at a county clinic, use the website highlighted in blue below. This is a message from Allegheny Alerts. Beginning immediately, the Health Department will vaccinate individuals aged 16 (Pfizer) or 18 (Moderna) to 64 who meet the Pennsylvania Phase 1A medical conditions. Conditions that qualify individuals include those who have cancer, chronic kidney disease, COPD, Down syndrome, heart conditions but not high blood pressure, immunocompromised, obesity, pregnancy, sickle cell disease, smoking and type 2 diabetes. The county now has four COVID-19 vaccine points of dispensing (POD) open and accepting appointments. Earlier this week, appointments through April 2 were released. Sites include the Castle Shannon VFD Banquet Hall, Central Baptist Church, Petersen Events Center, and the Ross Community Center gymnasium. Appointments are required for all sites. Individuals should NOT contact the sites. Appointments are announced through Allegheny Alerts and then posted on the county’s COVID Vaccine page. Residents without Internet access, or having difficulty navigating the online registration system, may contact 2-1-1 for assistance in scheduling. The line for appointments, when available, is open from 9 AM to Noon daily. Callers may select option 1 for COVID services, and then option 1 again for a first dose appointment. Anyone arriving without an appointment, or not meeting priority criteria will be turned away. Walk-up registrations are not available. The county is transitioning to a new registration system that will launch early next week that will address many of the biggest challenges that were faced with the existing system, including allowing for pre-registration and for one-time use links for private clinics. As a result, current clinics will be closed for registration at 9 AM on Friday and phone registrations through 2-1-1 will be closed at 5 PM on Friday in order to migrate all of the information to the new system. More details on the new system will be available upon its launch next week. Resource navigators at 2-1-1 remain available 24/7 to assist the community with questions related to the COVID-19 vaccines and any other COVID-related inquiries. Call-takers can also refer callers to the Pittsburgh Poison Center for clinical-related questions about the vaccine. 1930s General Electric refrigerator

I have a 1930s General Electric refrigerator in my basement that’s beenhere since I moved into my Highland Park home. It’s old, pretty dirty, a little rusty and needs new insulation around the door. It has a little freezer compartment inside that is frozen over. But it’s been running continuously for over 35 years and still purrs. If anyone wants it and can get it out my side door (up about 10 steps with a landing), it needs to be gone by Sunday evening at 9pm. Hi Neighbors, I just wanted to let folks know that while searching to sign my parents up for a vaccine I noticed that there is wide availability at centers outside of PGH. If you're willing to drive, and want to get a vaccine asap, I'd recommend checking out the location in Kittaning or Clarion. Clarion has openings as soon as tomorrow at 8:15am and Kittaning seems to have them available as soon as next week. You just have to click around a bunch on Kittanings website to find times.
