Spreading the word about a great resource, Conservation Consultants, Inc. (CCI). I’m a new homeowner in Highland Park and a neighbor recommended this fantastic local non-profit that conducts energy assessments on homes and small businesses. My original goal was to have them identify how to address some drafty areas, and I was so surprised at how comprehensive the assessment was. All rooms were professionally measured and all major appliances were assessed…and thank goodness, because they identified a very dangerous clog with my hot water heater that was starting to back carbon monoxide into my home. It was not yet at emergency levels, but it was not picked up during my pre-sale home inspection. They did lead testing, used infrared cameras to check on insulation density and used a blower door test to suck the air out of the home to identify where the drafty areas were. The cost was very reasonable and I have a fantastic report, complete with photos that identified areas to address immediately and what can wait, and projections about how much I could save on my energy bills if I made the improvements. Some I could do myself, such as updating the door sweep and putting some caulk around the entry door. They also have a list of bonded professionals and they are great at helping you to put together an action plan. Wonderful resource for all of us with old homes. All of the contractors are great…Virginia McGrath was mine and she is fantastic…I’ve emailed and called her since my assessment to ask her opinion about a couple of items. FOCUS Pittsburgh collection on Thursday, 26 SEP 19, starting at 9:00 AM for Non-Perishable Food, School Suppies and Personal Hygiene Items

Dear Neighbors, We are again letting our neighborhood know that we will be driving the neighborhood picking up for the monthly FOCUS Collection on Thursday, 26 SEP 19. We will be around the neighborhood at 9:00 AM that morning, so we are looking for non-perishable food, school supplies and Personal Hygiene Items. No clothes. School supplies of any kind and knapsacks too. Please donate, as these are all needed and we are running our monthly pick-up from the neighborhood for Supplies for FOCUS !!! We have attached a letter in regards to what they need, but most importantly it is FOOD, Monthly needs, etc. are all needed at this time. Last month we took our Van Loaded, and it was so needed and so much appreciated. Mike and Brigette Nadler, are coordinating the Highland Park pick up. If you are inclined to help, leave the supplies on your front porch and we will pick up and get your donations to FOCUS. So we are doing this again on Thursday, 26 SEP 19. We will be around starting at 9:00 AM, and need to get the donations there by noon. Please DO NOT drop off here, as we do not have a way of storing donations. MAKE SURE that there is a Phone Number so that we can reach you during collection times, should there be any questions. FOCUS Pittsburgh, located in the Hill District, is part of a national movement through the Orthodox Church, that helps to fight poverty in communities across America. One of their areas in need is keeping their food pantry stocked with food and supplies. Currently, their shelves are empty and they need help. The above attachment highlights what they need. It could change on a monthly basis, at which point that need will be communicated. FOCUS Pittsburgh has been in the Hill since 2011. Each week, hundreds of backpacks are distributed to children in the Hill and Southside Public Schools. They offer an 8-week professional development class that teaches non-technical job skills to promote employment and success in the workplace. Bag lunches are distributed every Saturday through the Churches....140 lunches to be exact. In 2014, they opened a free medical and behavioral health clinic for people who are uninsured or who don't qualify for medical assistance. Most recently, they have purchased an RV, trained dozen of volunteers, and have formed a trauma response team -- responding to homicides in Allegheny County by providing on-site psychological and mental health care to residents affected by violence. "Highland Park" Free international film festival this weekend at Pitt

Dear friends and neighbors, I founded 5 years ago in South Carolina a film festival about cultural heritage and archeology called Arkhaios, which features beautiful, international, award-winning films. I just returned this week from the 5-year anniversary festival in South Carolina! Having settled in Pittsburgh earlier this year, next to my kids and grand-kids, I will be showing a selection of the films this weekend at the Frick Fine Arts Building on Pitt campus. The format is a combination of lectures by Pitt professors and graduate students, followed by the films which received the Arkhaios awards last week.
