Local Business Conversations On December 9th, Councilwoman Gross hosted a food production round-table. More than a dozen local, small business entrepreneurs gathered to learn about solutions and gather potential support for expansion and development. The Councilwoman helped facilitate the meeting which included a question and answer session with the ACHD (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55a…) , a presentation by Bridgeway Capital (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55…) , discussions about barriers to gaining entry to the local food scene, and practical conversations about packaging, business plans, and other development topics. ------------------------------------------------------------ Rally for Food Access Councilwoman Gross, other area leaders, residents, and community advocates showed their support for keeping the site at 5200 Penn Avenue a grocery store in late December. Access to healthy, affordable food is critical to the stability of any neighborhood. The desire to have a grocery store in the area is strong and determined and Councilwoman Gross will continue to ensure that voice be heard. Councilwoman Gross touched on her continued effort to combat blight with an emphasis on utilizing more green infrastructure and open space in the city. She also highlighted her desire to focus policy efforts around Pittsburgh families. As more and more families continue to move into the city issues such as affordable and quality childcare and access to healthy and reasonably priced food will continue to deserve attention. News from the Neighborhoods Strip District Honored The Strip District has recently been presented with a "Great Places in Pennsylvania" award by the PA Chapter of the American Planning Association. The award recognizes unique, memorable places that work not only for their community, but as a model others want to emulate – places of exemplary character, quality, planning, identity, cultural interest, and community involvement with a sustainable vision for tomorrow. Read more about the award here (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55…) . ------------------------------------------------------------ Winter Walk in Stanton Heights On January 24th the Stanton Heights Neighborhood Association (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55a…) will be hosting a walk through to discover potential green projects in the neighborhood such as the creation of a community composting program, neighborhood clean-ups, plans for a parklet at Stanton & Woodbine, and the formalization of the Allegheny River Greenway in partnership with Morningside. The walk begins at 11:00 am. Construction crews will still be present, however, as they continue to conduct sidewalk improvements, implement tree plantings, and provide other upgrades until the summer months. ------------------------------------------------------------ Christmas Tree Recycling Drop off Christmas trees at any of Pittsburgh's four recycling centers or any of Allegheny County's nine regional parks for composting as the holiday season comes to an end. All ornaments, tinsel, lights, and stands must be removed prior to drop-off. As I complete my first year in office I would like to briefly touch on the progress we have been able to achieve in 2014. Major accomplishments have been achieved in terms of legislation as well as community projects and neighborhood initiatives as we continue to work towards obtaining stronger and more empowered communities. Vacancy & Blight During my first month in office I introduced and garnered support around a bill creating the Pittsburgh Land Bank (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55…) , a non-profit entity designed to combat blight throughout the city. It required numerous community meetings, many conversations with residents and community leaders, and integral discussions between City Council members, in order to pass this piece of landmark legislation – considered to be the biggest piece of legislation in five years – for the betterment of our neighborhoods. We work every day with community groups (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55a…) to help identify problem properties, alert neighborhoods about upcoming Treasurer’s sale (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55…) properties, facilitate communications between landholders and residents, and demand accountability and responsiveness from developers. Infrastructure Improvement & Green Initiatives I ensured the Department of Public Works (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55a…) and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55a…) continued the next steps for an updated design plan for the Heth’s Run Project (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55…) . I used my office to further efforts to improve Lawrenceville’s Arsenal Park (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55a…) including the securing of capital funds to maintain the park’s historic wall along 40th street. I secured funding for improved pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure in District 7 including audible traffic signals at key intersections and a design plan for a potential off-road bike trail connecting numerous neighborhoods throughout the city. I fully supported an ordinance (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55a…) amendment to the city’s sidewalk reimbursement program to provide an increase in compensation for residents repairing sidewalks damaged by city tree roots. I also have been working to improve utility coordination between agencies and hosted a public safety walk through in Polish Hill to bring together key public safety officials to collaboratively address concerns of residents. I have continued to support initiatives such as Project 15206 (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55a…) and others working on the local level to bring greener practices to our neighborhoods. Working Families & Small Businesses Supporting working families and local businesses has been a priority since coming into office. Over the last year, I co-sponsored legislation (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55…) to provide reasonable accommodations for pregnant city workers as well as legislation (http://pittsburghpa.us9.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=602f53494c816285fe55…) designed to support childcare facilities in the city. I also organized and facilitated a Food Producers Roundtable to help connect independent entrepreneurs with resources. As exciting as 2014 has been I know it is only the beginning of what we can do. I am looking forward to building on this momentum and taking it into 2015 to continue building stronger, more empowered communities, improving and greening our infrastructure, providing more livable neighborhoods for families, and supporting our local businesses. More Livable Streets in Bloomfield Concerned residents and business owners have come together to form Bloomfield Livable Streets, an independent community organization focused on promoting equal access and safety for all users of Bloomfield’s streets. Our group came together because we care about Bloomfield. We wanted to make the most of Bloomfield’s great characteristics as a walkable and vibrant neighborhood. Though, we were also concerned about the challenges that come from so many people traveling throughout Bloomfield everyday. We decided that our group would work to make the most of these unique characteristics by advocating for infrastructure enhancements to Bloomfield streets that balances all the ways people get around--whether they are on a bike, on a bus, in a car, or on foot. (HP) Found: Long-Haired Cats

Hello neighbors, Two long-haired cats have been hanging around our house recently. One is orange and the other is black. Neither looks to be in very good condition so I doubt that they have homes but I thought I'd send out their pictures in case they do. The black one has something tied to its tail, sort of looks like it could've been a bow but I can't get close enough to tell, it could just as easily be a plastic bag or piece of trash. It's been on there for several days though so it's rather secure. Please let me know if you know to whom one or both belong. Thanks, Sherri
