Hi, Neighbors, I know this equipment is (sadly) nearly obsolete, but someone out there might still have a desire to set up a black and white darkroom. In my opinion, it's actually a lot more fun and magical than Photoshop. I am offering - free of charge - a used Omega B-66 enlarger, 35mm negative carrier, safe light, timer, red filter and easel. Hi HPers, I was recently burned (not literally) by first energy electricity supplier. I heard this was the case with manypeople in Pittsburgh. I switched back to Duq. Lt. immediately. If you recently had a very high light bill, it is because you had a variable rate.......... I also received another form which would allow me to choose a clean energy option for my electric supply. I am now quite wary of any changes!!!!!! It says it is available to Duq. Lt. customers, but it does NOT look like it is affiliated with Duq. Lt. in any way. Does anyone know anything about this--is it reputable, variable rate? Thanks, Mavis

[Highland Park] Kenyan Orphanage Update!

Dear Friends, Family and Neighbors, First of all, Maisie and I want to thank all of you for your support in what has proven to be, a most amazing, eye opening adventure. We thank you for your moral, verbal, and financial support as well as your words of wisdom, advice, and encouragement. It is hard to believe that the first half of this journey has already ended. I am back home safely in Pittsburgh and Maisie is continuing to work with the children at the orphanage back in Kenya. Here is a basic rundown of what we have accomplished/done so far: 1. We brought (more like lugged!) the giant suitcase of supplies to King's Kids Village and gave it to Jon and Molly - the owners. It was so fun to watch them go through it! They were beyond grateful and excited. 2. We picked out some of the more playful activities from the bag (bubbles, jump ropes, soccer ball, etc). With games in hand, I introduced Maisie to the 40 kids (ages 3-17) at the orphanage (most of whom I knew from my last visit in 2009). We played and played for several hours with them all - some of whom recognized me from years ago, some of whom did not-I showed them pictures of when I was there and that helped a lot - they really seemed to enjoy seeing photographs of themselves from 5 yrs earlier, exclaiming and pointing out their brothers and sisters to me in each one. I got to see 8 year old versions of the 3 year olds I once knew. It warmed my heart. I hadn't realized how much I had missed them! 3. We met some children that were new to the orphanage. We heard their stories and cried for them, relieved that they were found and rescued and safe. 4. We heard stories about some of the older children and what they were up to now that they are "graduated" (past 18 yrs old) from the orphanage and out in the real world. About 80% are either in college or working (one girl is studying to become a pilot!) while 20% went another route (pregnant, slums, etc). Jon and Molly (owners) are there for every child that has moved on and they have helped each one to get set up in an apartment (also owned by them) nearby. 5. Maisie was given her "assignment" for her volunteering time at the orphanage. Since my last visit in 2009, King's Kids has established a room dedicated to art. The kids have really blossomed as artists, so much so that they want to try to sell some of their pieces. I saw many of them and was truly blown away with their creativity and beauty. They use all sorts of media including banana leaves and even eggshells! Maisie is helping them to develop a gallery that displays their work for purchase. She is also helping the owners to develop some helpful seminars for the older kids who will be facing outside orphanage life soon as they enter in to the next stage of their lives. It is exciting stuff!! 6. We lugged large, stuffed suitcase #2 to the baby orphanage called Happy Life Baby Home. They loved all of the cloth diapers and onesies, etc. In fact, they were thrilled! We spent the day feeding babies and helping them get changed in to clean diapers and clothes. They loved to be held and cuddled and we left with our hearts filled.
